NEW–DOWNTOWN CHARLOTTETOWN
GIFT CARD
(From the Company that brought us the Food Island Card)
We are upgrading the  Downtown Dollars  program to a Gift Card, launching May 2023, under the new name,  Downtown Charlottetown Gift Card. We are incredibly excited to bring this new opportunity to you, our members, and your customers. We’ll market this new card as – the gift for everyone for every occasion and the ideal way to  support downtown businesses. The cards cannot be used outside the BIA, thus keeping money downtown.

We have contracted with Miconex, the company who brought us the “Food Island Card”. The Downtown Charlottetown Gift Card will offer your business an even more convenient way to attract new customers and encourage spending from regular customers. It is our goal to double the usual Downtown Dollars annual sales with the new card option - meaning more sales for local shops and services.

There is no  cost to sign up. So be sure to contact us today to ‘CASH’ in on this fantastic program.

How Does it Work?
This is a DCI branded Prepaid Visa Gift Card and is swiped through your credit card terminal. REDEMPTION IS AUTOMATIC – you will no longer have to collect your Downtown Dollars and submit them for reimbursement, resulting in less administration work for you and your team. Regular Visa Gift Card fees apply.

The Gift Cards can be purchased online, or in person at our office. Like the paper dollars, the funds don’t expire and can be purchased in any denomination.

To Join:
1.    Contact the DCI office to receive your Gift Card agreement - paper or electronically.
2.    A DCI representative will drop by your business to complete the onboarding transaction.
3.    Once step #2 is complete, your business will be added to the Participants Directory.
4.    Your business will receive an instruction package from us for your staff including easy to follow instructions, an “Accepted Here” sticker and more.

The more Downtown Businesses that sign up to participate in this opportunity, the more successful it will be for all. Let’s see how much local spend a Downtown Gift Card Program can deliver to our City.

Downtown Charlottetown Gift Card is issued by Peoples Trust Company. Card funds are not insured by the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC) or any other government deposit insurer or agency. Funds do not expire, non-reloadable and no cash access. For Cardholder Agreement or Customer Service: www.getmybalance.com or 1-833-558-1108.

2023 Federal Budget Announces Lower Credit Card Transaction Fees for Small Businesses
In Budget 2023, the government announced it has secured commitments from Visa and Mastercard to lower fees for small businesses.
More than 90 per cent of credit card-accepting businesses will see their interchange fees reduced by up to 27 per cent from the existing weighted average rate. These reductions are expected to save eligible small businesses in Canada approximately $1 billion over five years. Combined with the prior actions of this government in 2020, these measures amount to nearly $1.5 billion of costs savings achieved for small businesses.
The government's expectation is that the commitments by credit card networks to lower interchange fees for small businesses will not adversely impact interchange fees paid by other businesses. The government also expects other credit card companies to take similar actions to lower fees for small businesses, and that payment processors will pass these reductions through to small businesses. To achieve this, the government will be engaging with networks, acquirers, and payment service providers.
More details, including eligible businesses, will be released in the coming weeks.
