Big Data Analytics Drives Innovative Research in E-Scooter Usage and Public Transit
UFTI data science researchers Dr. Xiang Yan, Yiming Xu (graduate student ), and Dr. Xilei Zhao worked on a research project that assessed where shared e-scooter trips tend to occur in Washington, DC. Making the Case for Accessibility-Based Planning: Getting People to their Desired Destinations 
There is growing awareness among transportation professionals and decision makers that accessibility, not mobility, should guide planning. Mobility is how fast people can travel and accessibility is how convenient people can reach essential destinations. In this study, UFTI researcher Dr. Xiang Yan argues that the main outcome of improving accessibility is increasing people’s choice to desirable destinations. Read more here.
New Course Approved for Machine Learning Applications in Civil Engineering
The H.W. College of Engineering will be offering a new course in Spring 2022 that uses the latest techniques and tools in machine learning to solve civil engineering problems. The 3-credit course, EGN 5215 Machine Learning Applications in Civil Engineering, will be taught by Dr. Xilei Zhao of the Department of Civil & Coastal Engineering.
Local Public Radio Station Features I-STREET Research on Smart Bike Racks Mounted on Buses
Researchers working on the UFTI's I-STREET initiative have developed a remote, real-time sensing system that detects when bicycles are mounted on bus bike racks.
