From The Editor:
The turn of the calendar means another Spring lacrosse season is just around the corner. It also means the return of The Scoop, the Carolina’s longest running lacrosse e-newsletter.
It’s tough to believe that this will be our sixth season of The Scoop. They say time flies when you are having fun! Back in 2017, we were looking for a way to increase the media coverage of our players and the local lacrosse scene. It’s no secret that the local media doesn’t pay much attention to what is going on in the lacrosse world but we know that there are stories and players that deserve to be highlighted and we know that there are readers who are interested.
Since we started The Scoop back in 2017, lacrosse in the Carolinas has come a long way. The sport here continues to grow and the players from here continue to show that they are amongst the best in the country. Because we primarily run The Scoop during the lacrosse season, we figured we would use the first edition of 2022 to share some offseason highlights and layout what to expect this year. Here is what you may have missed over the last few months:
- Our Team 91 teams picked up wins over some of the top ranked club programs in the country including Baltimore Crabs, Sweetlax, Eclipse, Resolute, Philadelphia Freedom, Leading Edge, 3D New England, Big 4, Team 91 MD, Shore 2 Shore and more. Our guys are playing against the best teams in the country and enjoying a lot of success while they are doing it.
- Our Team 91 South 2024 team, made up of current sophomores from around the Carolinas, was ranked as the #3 team in the country by Inside Lacrosse following the 2021 Fall season.
- Current Juniors Brayson Wilson (Cannon School and a UNC commit) and Karter Williams (Hough High School and a Notre Dame commit) were ranked in the top 60 players in the country in their recruiting class by Inside Lacrosse and the National Lacrosse Federation.
-
27 of our current seniors with Team 91 Charlotte have made verbal commitments to play college lacrosse. That is the most EVER out of a graduating class in Charlotte. You can check out the full list here. The junior class has 5 players committed already and has the potential to top the current senior class in total number of players committed.
- 2021 graduate, and current Ohio State freshman, Bobby Van Buren was named the #1 defenseman in the 2021 recruiting class. You can learn more about Bobby below and you’ll be hearing a lot about him this Spring!
-
The 2021 Southeast Senior Showcase in May honored 44 of the best graduating senior lacrosse players in the Carolinas. All 44 have gone on to play college lacrosse. You can check out some of the pictures here. You can also nominate players for the 2022 game here.
We also continued to see growth in lacrosse at the youngest levels with over 1,000 players participating in Team 91 academy programs, leagues, camps or teams since the end of the last lacrosse season. As you can see, things are looking good for lacrosse in the Carolinas!
As we shift our focus to the 2022 Spring lacrosse season, here are a few of the things you can expect from The Scoop:
- Previews of NCAA games and players to watch, including some of our guys that have matriculated from Charlotte to the next level, like Bobby.
- Previews of North Carolina High School games and players to watch. We'll give you the playbook to get out and see the rising stars of the local lacrosse community.
- Our Team 91 Player Spotlights – Read about some of the top high school lacrosse players in the Carolinas through our Team 91 Player Spotlights.
- Our North Carolina High School Coaches Polls for Charlotte and the Triad region.
- A collection of news from around the lacrosse world.
- NCAA Tournament previews.

- Game recaps and more!
