Dat and his Mah are newly arrived in the country. On the first day of school, his Mah tells him that everything he hears will sound like gibberish but to do his best. The day is confusing and a bit lonely until something unexpected happens. An offer of friendship shows Dat that there is more than one way to communicate. This strange new place with strange new people and words starts to make sense. Black and white illustrations are used to convey the strangeness Dat feels. Color seeps in as Dat becomes more comfortable with his new surroundings. Many kids (and grown ups!) will relate to the feeling of alienation in a new situation.

In a quiet town, by a magical wood, is Ravenfall Inn; a B & B that happens to lie at the crossroads of the Otherworld and the mortal world. Run by the magical Ballinkay family, and a black cat (that may not actually be a cat) that likes to play pranks, it's the kind of place where you're always welcome and the house will make you a cup of hot chocolate when you need it most. It's the story of Anna Ballinkay and Colin Pierce and their families. Anna is struggling with her power to see death and Colin, with solving the mystery of his parent's death and his own growing abilities. This book is whimsical and warm, and very autumnal. It's about grief and loss, but also friendship and what makes family. It's a book I didn't want to put down and a town I didn't want to leave.

What is Braille?
Braille is a tactile representation of alphabetic and numerical symbols using six dots to represent each letter and number (including musical, mathematical, and scientific symbols). Invented by Louis Braille in the 19th century, Braille is used by blind and partially sighted people to read the same books and periodicals as those in print in a visual font.
If you or someone you know could benefit from access to resources in Braille, The Perkins Library is a local resource which provides free access to qualified participants.
|
|
Did you know that January 4th is World Braille Day? Part of Braille Literacy Month and celebrated since 2019, World Braille Day recognizes the importance of Braille as a means of communication for blind and partially sighted people!
