Protecting Loons: Partnering with the Loon Preservation Committee
With its iconic call and plumage, the Common Loon is a much loved summer sight on Newfound Lake. Loons are threatened across the state, including on Newfound Lake, where the reproductive rate of our nesting loons is nearly half the state average. This year, NLRA is working with the Loon Preservation Committee to help Newfound's loons survive and thrive.

Two Ways to Protect Loons

In keeping with this edition's loon feature, here are two easy things you can do to protect loons.
Clean Out Your Tacklebox
Lead poisoning from ingesting lead fishing tackle is the leading cause of documented Common Loon mortality in New Hampshire. It is illegal to use lead tackle smaller than one oz in size. Clean out your tacklebox to help protect loons from lead. Learn more.
Give Loons Space
Loons that feel threatened by human activity will leave their nests, causing eggs to fail, or leave chicks unattended, making them vulnerable to predators. Whether on foot, by paddle, or by motorboat, remain at least 150 feet from loons, or more if the loons shows signs of distress, such as craning its neck low. As a threatened species, it is illegal to hunt or harass loons.
