January 10, 2022
FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT

Wow, the start of January has flown by. I have so many plans for the last 6 months of this Administrations and thought I might share some with you now.

In January while the clubs are readying their Reports, don’t forget to join in the frivolity of our Monthly Open House on the 16th of the month. Between 5 – 7 pm there is always a group of members that like to just get together to talk. Remember that we are all spokes of the large Federation Wheel and together we keep rolling along strong.

In February, Districts are readying their Reports for the State Chairs, enjoy and revel in the time of bragging your District get to partake in. There is no February Open House on Zoom, but rather one in-person on the 24th of February in Sacramento, again all members are welcome to enjoy the hostesses of our CFWC Membership Team. Our CFWC Executive Board Meeting is being held in Sacramento on February 25 and 26. On February 24, members can attend our special event, the FOR ART’S SAKE FUNDRAISER DINNER, at a price of $75.00 each. All proceeds going to the CFWC Art Fund. Our very special guest at the State Board Meeting is GFWC International President, Marian St Clair. Also, the District LEADS Candidates will be invited to join us for a training session over both Friday and Saturday, and our CFWC Nominating Committee will be meeting and interviewing all CFWC Officer Candidates running for Office in the 2022 – 2024 Administration.

In March, we will resume our Workshop Series with all non-reporting CFWC Chairs. The Reporting Chairs will be readying their Reports, combining all the Reports sent by Districts and Clubs. Planning is ongoing for the Workshops, and each will be held via Zoom. There will be an Open House on the 16th of the month from 5 – 7 pm. So, get your calendars ready and let’s get together via Zoom.

April will bring many District Conventions; we hope each of our readers will make it a point to be at their Conventions this year to celebrate the wonderfulness of being a member of Federation and your contributions to Community. District Presidents are already hard at work planning speakers and events to share with their club memberships. There will be an Open House on the 16th of the month from 5 – 7 pm.

May is CFWC Convention Month! No workshops via Zoom, but there are several planned for Convention. No Open House either and we will be holding it in-person at Convention. Watch for the CALL to CONVENTION to go out very soon in the New Year, probably at the start of March and make your plans to join us in Anaheim, May 11 – 14. This ear’s Convention theme is BACK IN THE SADDLE AGAIN! CFWC Convention Co-Chairs, Priscilla Bolinder and Edie Seger, along with their Convention Committee, have an exciting time planned for each of us. We will install our new CFWC President, Barbara Briley Beard on the final night of Convention and I know that the Los Cerritos District is busy planning a wonderful time for all of us there in attendance.

June will usher in the newly elected CFWC Executive Board and Committee Members. Although, I will still be attending the GFWC International Convention as your President. That Convention is in New Orleans this year…never been, but I have always wanted to see that place.

You can see that the next6 months are jammed and packed with splendid things to keep us busy. I hope that each of you will be a big part of what is happening and enjoy in revelry of creating a stronger California Federation!

Luv, Pam

Domestic & Sexual Violence  Awareness and Prevention

January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Month and January 11th is specifically designated as National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. On this day we are all called to fight human trafficking wherever it exists.

This month has been dedicated to raising awareness about the different forms of human trafficking, also known as modern slavery. Like the United States, many countries have worked to implement the “3P” paradigm of Prosecuting traffickers, Protecting victims, and Preventing the crime through anti-trafficking laws.

The U.S. Department of State raises awareness of human trafficking domestically and and abroad through the U.S. embassies and consulates and as a nation reaffirm President Lincoln’s promise of freedom, that “neither slavery nor involuntary servitude shall exist in the United States.” This serves to remind us that we must recommit to do our part to end human trafficking.

At the beginning of 2022 as I anticipate the reports from clubs all across the state of California, I am reminded of the amazing job clubs already do to help combat this and of the new ways we continually strive to learn to be a part of the solution.
        CFWC Health and Wellness Program,
Myrna Binford, Chairman

A very Happy New Year, may it bring health and happiness to you and yours.
Resolutions are always popular for the New Year. While better health is number one, losing weight is number one under that title. It’s hard, but what’s to prevent you from trying. Working at home or just being at home during the pandemic has limited exercise activities. Greater attention to health has been at the forefront during the pandemic – obesity, diabetes, etc. And, extra weight can cause a mirade of other medical issues.
If you are serious about losing a significant amount of weight, always check with your doctor first. The clinic may have a weight loss program and the doctor can give you a referral. I went through a program that met 1x a week for 1 year. I did loose 37 pounds and have kept it off, but unfortunately, I need to lose more. My program was free and I had the option to go back as needed. Unfortuntely, the pandemic has put the program on hold.
Besides watching your caloric intake, exercise is the key. My husband has a bicycling group that meets every Wednesday. They go about 60 miles. So, when he comes home, he will tell me how many calories his fitness watch says he has burned on the trip (usually around 1800-2300). There are several tech apps you can look at and download – FITOn, Apple Fitness+, Flexit, etc. You can look on their websites to see which is best for you.
If you have impact issue, you can seek out low-impact exercises – swimming (YMCAs have pools or you can find a swimming pool near you, go to Swimmers Guide.com), chair exercises (there is a program on TV that has chair exercises, or if you belong to a gym – SilverSneakers has a free program (for Medicare age people, but you will have to check your eligibility on the internet). Stationary bike and T’ai Chi are also suggestions. T’ai Chi is good for strengthening. Senior Centers or Community Centers usually have fitness programs.
Walking, running, rowing, road bicycling, skiing, and dancing are all good for higher impact exercises. Some are more expensive than others if you are on a budget. It is always easier if you have company when you are exercising. It makes the time go faster and checks the socializing box.
Keep track of your caloric intake. Consumer Reports that they have requested that the FDA have delivery apps (Grubhub, Door Dash, etc.) post the caloric, sugar and fat content of their foods.
District Deans, I am looking forward to reading the Narratives. I would like to have them by February 8 so I can get them out to the judges and then back to Barbara by the 15th. Thanks.
