April 2023 Update

April is Autism Awareness Month

ASD is a group of developmental disabilities that causes challenges in many areas of one’s life. Some of the profoundly affected areas include social, communication, and behavior. Children with ASD are usually nonverbal or they have restricted or repetitive behaviors. ASD also affects people of all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

The month-long observance takes place during World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD), celebrated each year on April 2nd. WAAD was adopted by the United Nations in 2007 to shine a bright light on autism as a growing global health crisis. WAAD activities increase world knowledge of autism and impart information about the importance of early diagnosis and early intervention. Additionally, WAAD celebrates the unique talents and skills of persons with autism around the world.

Public Health

Emergency Ends

The federal public health emergency in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic will end on May 11, 2023. Immediately upon the end of the public health emergency, we must follow new DMAS telehealth rules. The most important news is that the option to deliver early intervention services via telehealth is not ending.

Click here for the new requirements associated with telehealth that will go into effect when the public health emergency ends.

Annual Family Survey

Wave 1 begin mailing - 3/29-4/5

Mailing of survey packets has started. Email invitations to those with email addresses have also been sent and some surveys have already been completed via the web.

Wave 2 begin mailing - 4/19-4/23

Families who did not respond to the first round of surveys will receive a second copy of the survey to increase the overall response rate.

Calls begin to localities with less than 15 completes - 5/14-5/21

These calls are intended to increase each systems survey response to have a representative sample.

TRAC-IT Need To Knows

Full Implementation of TRAC-IT:

Phase 2 (full implementation) of TRAC-IT will launch on December 11, 2023. Beginning on that date, all required data must be entered either directly in TRAC-IT or through an electronic health record (EHR) upload.

Billing Extract Webinar: April 5, 1:30 – 2:30

Join us and SSG to get a preview and explanation of the enhanced TRAC-IT billing extracts that will be available in a few months. For some agencies, their final decision about pursuing an EHR upload will depend on the extent to which these billing extracts provide the data they need. Please forward this information to your billing staff if it will be helpful for them to see and hear the information firsthand.

TRAC-IT SUPPORT:

State Systemic Improvement Plan (SSIP)

ITCVA is committed to supporting the social-emotional needs of children and families. The ultimate goal of the current SSIP is to improve the percentage of infants and toddlers who substantially increase their rate of growth in the area of positive social-emotional skills (including social relationships) by the time they exit early intervention.

Supporting Parents and Families with Social Emotional Learning

As early interventionists one of the most significant things that we can impart to parents and family members in the course of our work is that they are their child’s first teacher. Although our content and intervention are critical in the supporting the child’s progress, the parent is the expert on their child, and they can embed the interventions into the child’s natural routine, to build and reinforce needed social emotional skills.

One way to encourage and support our families is.. Read Full article

Making Life Easier: Holidays: Strategies for Success

While the holiday season (including Easter and Spring Break) is filled with enjoyable activities, events and traditions, it can also be a hectic and stressful time. Travel, shopping, loud music, bright lights, unfamiliar food, and busy schedules can turn typical routines upside down! The disruption to routine can be particularly difficult for children who depend on routine and predictability to engage in appropriate behavior.

Resources

TEACHCVI is a partnership that aims to create collaborative tools for teachers and health care professionals. It is meant to build a bridge between teachers/educators and health care professionals so they can work together to benefit the target group: children with Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI).

CVI Now: Early Intervention Series

Series speaks to your whole experience as a new CVI parent. It offers practical knowledge, science-backed information, and emotional insight.

Every individual with CVI has a right to life-changing access. Learn about assessment and how to provide a multi-sensory approach to learning for children with CVI. There is no one-size-fits-all approach for CVI, but there is a wide range of promising practices that meet the unique needs of children with CVI.

For resources and tools to screen for Cerebral/Cortical Visual Impairment, which if diagnosed early will enable a baby to receive supports from a vision specialist. Visual supports would include how to present materials including spoon for feeding, locating objects to crawl towards, etc. see here: https://www.teachcvi.net/

Update:

Valery Kircher is a TeachCVI educator and is available to provide training to localities.
