The Intersection of Kiawah Island Parkway at Beachwalker Drive
This year, the Town completed a comprehensive traffic and corridor study, as well as an additional study of the intersection of Kiawah Island Parkway and Beachwalker Drive. This intersection was the Town’s immediate concern, and the study revealed its current traffic pattern would “fail” in the 2026 horizon years.

The Town is working with Kimley-Horn to design a two-phased project to assist with traffic. The project’s first phase was to improve bike paths along Beachwalker Drive (completed). The second phase is to rework the intersection at Beachwalker Drive and the Kiawah Island Parkway (underway).

This second phase adds an eastbound right turn lane at the intersection from Kiawah Island Parkway to Beachwalker Drive, which will help those turning on Beachwalker Drive avoid getting stuck behind vehicles going through the gate or reduce waiting time to turn right onto Beachwalker Drive. The plan also changes outbound traffic behind the gate from two lanes to one, creating a free-flow traffic situation. With these improvements, Kimley-Horn predicts much better levels of service and vehicle delays, which ultimately improves safety and traffic for the community.

OUR WORLD Lecture Series
Of the 8500 acres of land mass that make up Kiawah Island, almost 45 percent is composed of salt marshes. Twice a day, these habitats are inundated and drained due to tides. There are fewer natural events of more importance to Kiawah residents than the health and stability of these marshes.

What is being done to protect them in a time of changing climate? What is Kiawah's plan for the future?

MARK YOUR CALENDAR:

Thursday, November 17, the OUR WORLD Lecture Series will focus on the Town of Kiawah's Marsh Management Program. The speaker will be Nicole Elko, Executive Director of SC Beach Advocates and lead consultant on the Town's new marsh management plan.

Sam Bush
Saturday, November 12, 2022
West Beach Conf. Center | 7:30 p.m.
Cost: $15 (tickets required)

There was only one prize-winning teenager carrying stones big enough to say thanks, but no thanks to Roy Acuff. Only one son of Kentucky finding a light of inspiration from Bill Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys and catching a fire from Bob Marley and The Wailers. Only one progressive hippie allying with like-minded conspirators, rolling out the New Grass revolution, and then leaving the genre’s torch-bearing band behind as it reached its commercial peak. There is only one consensus pick of peers and predecessors, of the traditionalists, the rebels, and the next gen devotees. Music’s ultimate inside outsider. Or is it outside insider? There is only one Sam Bush.
