Diabetes In The Spotlight.
November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. In the spirit of the month, and due to the association of diabetes with the severity of the COVID-19 disease, this month's article sheds some light on diabetes - types, prevention and management.

Dinema Mate is a Graduate Research Assistant at the Center for Social Research and an Introduction to Public Speaking Instructor in the Communications Department at North Dakota State University. Dinema is studying towards a MA in Communications and a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health at North Dakota State University. 
Strength Is In The Numbers.
Overall, the population of North Dakota's 357 incorporated cities increased by 97,249 people from 2010 to 2020. Combined, the urban cities (Fargo, West Fargo, Bismarck, Mandan, Grand Forks, Dickinson, Minot, Jamestown, Wahpeton, and Williston) accounted for 91 percent of this growth and for 83 percent of the state’s total population growth.
Diabetes By The Numbers.
According to the CDC, diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. Adults with diabetes are 2 to 4 times more likely than adults without diabetes to have a heart disease or experience a stroke.

Diabetes prevalence in North Dakota is lower than in the U.S. but there are large disparities by race, income, and educational attainment.
