Sunapee Happenings
"Winter’s pristine white canvas... an ideal backdrop for spotting birds".
"Celebrations infuse life with passion and purpose.
They summon the human spirit”.
Terrance E. Deal
Our newsletter this week is dedicated to Celebration.  For more than a few days this past week, stories of triumph and fun... emanating from Beijing as elite athletes catch the attention of every country in the world... and television shows have refreshingly been opening with gold medal ceremonies or inspired performances.  All a welcome respite from ‘historic storms’, another Covid chart, Russian tanks on the border and political rancor.  Let’s turn our attention to the beauty of snow on the mountain... local students excelling in athletic and literary contests... an amazing quarterback leading team to Super Bowl victory... community groups working together to support neighbors and enrich our lives on a daily basis... all worthy of celebration!
ps... do not miss a treat at the end of this week’s message! Hint: There is no music more jubilant than John Williams’ composition celebrating the Olympics!

First Friday MicroGallery Openings and More…
NEW DATE! Friday February 18th 5:00 – 7:00 pm

Join us for the opening reception of the Annual CFA Members Show at The New London Inn and Bar Harbor Bank and Trust on Main Street in New London. Also, we hope you will join us at the newest MicroGallery at Prospect Hill Gallery in Sunapee Harbor.  Although not open that night, Penny Koburger’s exhibit continues at the Blue Loon on Main Street and Loa Winter’s exhibit continues at the Tatewell Gallery on Newport Road, in New London.

Plus, meet Richard Haynes in a special CFA Opening Reception at the Davidow Center for Art and Design at Colby-Sawyer College. An American visual storyteller, Richard Haynes uses his art not only to make society aware of the invisible in this world but also to inspire unity. He is a painter, photographer, educator, mentor, and powerful advocate for social justice who currently serves as the Associate Director of Admissions for Diversity at the University of New Hampshire.

Chronicle WMUR-TV Jennifer Crompton writes: "Artist Richard Haynes settled in New Hampshire following a journey he describes as "an African American looking for a better way." Richard Haynes: Culture Keeper, Culture Maker presents Richard’s most recent acrylic paintings done in his signature style of semi-abstract faceless figures rendered in flat, bold colors, portraying “blacks and whites harmoniously living, working and playing together, side by side, even touching, something that was forbidden in Haynes' childhood world."

Stroll the Galleries and Enjoy the Art!  All exhibits are open during regular business hours as well and go through the end of April.

Please check our homepage for Covid updates and cancellations. Masks required at all venues.

“Rent” is what you need to pay every month in order to live. It’s also a description of a state of disrepair, disorder, as in “torn apart.” Author of the book, lyrics and music, Jonathan Larson named his rock musical RENTto include both senses of the word. And now you can see it (or see it again) at the Hopkins Center’s Moore Theater as the Dartmouth Department of Drama presents its first MainStage production since the beginning of the pandemic. (February 18-27).

Winner of a Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a Tony Award for Best Musical, RENT holds a unique place in Dartmouth history, as it was first seen at the College in 1994 as part of New York Theatre Workshop’s annual summer residency. It opened off-Broadway in 1996, moved to Broadway shortly thereafter, and closed in 2008, making it one of Broadway’s longest running shows.

Healthful Hints
(Calming after all that celebrating)
Not only is green tea delicious, but it is incredibly good for you, too! It contains antioxidants, called catechins, that have been shown to fight cell damage. Green tea can also promote good blood flow and lower cholesterol. Plus, making and drinking green tea is just plain relaxing!
Cute Critter
Have you met Walter the Cat... the unofficial Olympics mascot? Just as in the Super Bowl... some of the commercials being run during the Olympics are outstanding... either very moving or funny. We suspect more people will be tempted to adopt a furry feline , than buy a Chevy truck ! But ’thanks’ to Chevrolet for the smile.
Scam Alert
There has been a rash of both telephone and computer activity by scammers, prompting this warning by local Police.
NEWS ALERT - SCAM ALERT

The Sunapee Police Department has been made aware of an increasing number of reports of scam phone calls and other communications targeting Sunapee residents. Scammers are often forceful in trying to acquire personal information and can be very convincing in some cases. By doing this, scammers are "phishing" for information, such as your social security number, bank and/or credit card account numbers, and your e-mail address to name a few. These scammers may also state that you have won a reward or sweepstakes, and by following certain steps or instructions which they provide, you may claim that reward. In other cases, scammers will identify themselves as a government agency and threaten jail time for non-payment or non-compliance. When faced with a scam call or communication, The Sunapee Police Department urges the community to remain vigilant; Double check the validity of communications you receive and never give any personal or sensitive information to anyone you do not know or trust. Ask questions and be persistent! Most often, when you start asking questions, the scammer will hang up or cease all further communication with you. Please feel free to contact the Sunapee Police Department if you believe you have been or are being scammed.
