AIA February Luncheon - Register Today!
Join us on Thursday, February 10th at 11:30 a.m. at the Capitol View Event Center for the AIA February Luncheon. Our program is Innovation District: Building a Bridge of Inclusion in OKC. Oklahoma City’s Innovation District will reshape northeastern Oklahoma City with MAPS 4 funding and other incentives in the next several years. Join President and CEO, Katy Boren, to learn more about the Innovation District and the exciting things to come within the district.
As president and CEO of Oklahoma City’s Innovation District, Katy Boren spearheads the creation and development of the emerging district and is focused on creating a vibrant, fully-integrated community where people can live, work and play. Her goal is to develop collaboration between Oklahoma’s diverse sectors – bio science, aerospace, tech, energy, manufacturing and more – to foster new opportunities for entrepreneurship and innovation.

After earning her bachelor’s degree in mass communication from the University of Denver, Boren pursued a law degree at the University of Oklahoma. After graduating, she served a one-year courtship for the Arizona Superior Court before returning to Oklahoma. Boren has practiced oil and gas litigation, served as the vice president of regulatory affairs for Cox Communications for the eastern half of the country, owned her own law firm and acted as the chief of the Utilities Regulation Unit for the Oklahoma Attorney General’s office.

An Oklahoma native, Boren is passionate about supporting nonprofits in Oklahoma City and has served on several boards. Boren currently serves on the Downtown Oklahoma City Partnership Board of Directors, the NEOKC Renaissance Board of Directors, the Harold Hamm Diabetes Center Advisory Board, and is a member of Downtown Rotary. She also volunteers with Restore OKC and Martin Luther King Jr. elementary school in NEOKC. She has been recognized as one of Oklahoma’s Ladies in the News, a Rising Star of Oklahoma, one of the Journal Record’s Woman of the Year – Fifty Make a Difference honorees, and one of The Friday Paper’s Oklahoma City’s Most Powerful Women.

The deadline to register is Monday, February 7th. AIA Central Oklahoma Members attend free and nonmember guest cost is $25. AIA members will earn 1 LU for attending this program.

2022 AIA Award for Excellence in Public Architecture
Paul D. Mankins, FAIA
A proud product of the American Midwest, Paul Mankins, FAIA, has leveraged design excellence to craft distinguished spaces for lifelong learning, public art, and sustainability. He has contributed greatly to his hometown of Des Moines, and he has channeled his singular vision in building a portfolio of projects that supports all who live in Iowa. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a keen understanding of the critical role architects play in addressing the social, environmental, and economic concerns of the communities they serve.

“Paul Mankins is a serious voice in a land full of flash and trendiness. He has positioned himself in the field of architecture as a potent form seeker, public servant, and a socially responsive practitioner, a combination not easily or often found,” wrote Lawrence Scarpa, FAIA, in a letter nominating Mankins for the Award for Excellence in Public Architecture. “Comfortable with aesthetic, practical, political, and functional issues, Paul has mapped an architectural path that is as didactic as it is successful.”

Request for Proposals
Request for Proposals for Professional Architectural and Related Services for Scoping of FEMA Rated Community Safe Room

Rose Rock School is formally issuing a Request-for-Proposal (RFP) for architectural design of a multipurpose community safe room. RRS is seeking to repurpose the existing garage building into a FEMA-rated safe room, which can operate as a tornado shelter, multipurpose room (classroom, playroom), and other possible space as needed. Since the project will be funded under a FEMA grant, all interested parties must have experience in federal FEMA granting guidelines.
