No MOU….yet

On Friday, KEA leadership met with KSD as part of our Demand to Bargain.  This meeting lasted for an hour with KSD and the demand included concerns over the possible change in working conditions due to COVID-19. We listed the safety concerns of the staff, students, and community that have been brought to our attention.  Examples of the concerns included (super spreader) Meet and Greet events, in-person PD and trainings, how lunches will be handled, air quality and purification needs, and the possibility for the reinstatement of Covid leave. KSD had no immediate answers regarding these concerns, but we are meeting again today or tomorrow to hopefully get some resolutions to these matters. Please feel free to email us your concerns if you feel something needs to be addressed.

Mask and Vaccine Mandate

Last week, the Governor mandated that all school employees must be fully vaccinated by October 18, or face termination. This means that all employees must have the shots completed by October 4 at the latest. After that date, school districts must begin the termination process.

As a result, we have heard from a few members that they have tried to resign, but KSD is holding those employees to their contract. It does not make a lot of sense, especially if the plan is to terminate the employee by October 18. If you fall in this category, KEA is advising you to look at the exemption forms. If you have a medical reason, a religious objection, or a deep-seeded philosophical disagreement with vaccines, then you may qualify for an exemption. There will be requirements that come with an exemption including frequent COVID-19 testing.

KEA will keep you updated on information as it comes to us. The attorney general is in the process of interpreting the seemingly conflicting opinions of OSPI and Governor Inslee regarding the mandate. We don’t want to put anyone in a position where they have to be dishonest to remain employed; in fact, we highly discourage it. We also don't want anyone to resign unnecessarily. In the meantime, wear a mask and follow the safety protocols in your buildings.
