Early Learning for All
Our preschool-aged students are busy learning both indoors and outdoors as the weather gets nicer. Outside they're working on their gross-motor skills: running, jumping, throwing, catching. Inside, each classroom is working on a different unit of study: gardening, pets, insects, and exercise. Our students are making sense of their world through each of these units. While engaging in free-play centers, the students have an opportunity to build with blocks, explore science and math tools, use their imaginations while exploring dramatic play materials, use sensory materials to measure and pour, and much, much more. Preschool is a busy place where every moment of play is an opportunity to learn something new.

As the school year comes to a close, we are working on screening new students for next year's classrooms. Our preschool-aged classrooms accept students aged 3-5. Our newly-funded home visiting program accepts families with children prenatal to age 3. This home-visiting program provides families the services and support that everyone deserves! To obtain more information or schedule a screening, please call our office at 309-740-2294.

The Rotary Club of Peoria North invites students to attend their business luncheon 4 times per year. We had four seniors, Kyle, Kaden, Cash, and Robbie, attend, and they did a great job today as representatives of PRLC.
They enjoyed meeting the Rotarians, having lunch, listening to the guest speakers. They were also introduced and spoke of their plans. When asked, they all mentioned how important PRLC was to them and how their "second chance" was meaningful to them.

Mr. Croasdale's 12th grade English class has been participating in the Artist in Residence Program, a temporary, seasonal position for a local artist at the McClure Branch Library. The chosen artist leads a combination of formal and informal classes and workshops for library patrons at the McClure Branch. The library also works to schedule five art classes with local students at nearby schools.
This year, our chosen focus is writing and poetry, and we are working with local poet and editor Destinee Wilson. Her writing journey has lead her to many opportunities including editing Bluffs Literary Magazine, acting as Organizational Director of Our House Entertainment, as well as being asked to Co-Found and sit on the Board of My Writing Shed, a non-profit space for writers.
Destinee's work encompasses the uncomfortability of feeling emotions, the power that lives in finding your own voice, and the pain the accompanies the journey of healing. She hopes to share the lessons learned on this journey with others and administer hope to those who are living trapped within their own darkness.
In March, Wilson worked with the Knoxville Center for Student Success, and now in April and May is working with the Peoria Regional Learning Center. This program is funded by the educational sorority Delta Kappa Gamma.

Illinois Highlighted as a National Leader in Advancing Students' Mental Health
|
The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) has highlighted Illinois as a national leader in advancing students’ mental health using Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief funds set aside for state use. The national education organization featured the Resilience Education to Advance Community Healing (REACH) Statewide Initiative, which is a collaboration between the Illinois State Board of Education and the Center for Childhood Resilience at Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago and other key partners, at its legislative conference in Washington, D.C., on March 21.

State Superintendent Dr. Tony Sanders led a panel discussion, Spotlight on Illinois: Supporting Student Wellbeing, as part of a special in-person and livestreamed event that highlighted the impact of state recovery investments.
“Mental health and social-emotional learning are not separate from academics; they are the foundation of academic success,” said State Superintendent of Education Dr. Tony Sanders. “Access to mental health supports and schools that understand and know how to address the trauma in so many of our students’ lives will help us strengthen student attendance and students’ engagement in school. This is what our students and teachers have been asking for. The pandemic heightened the need for mental health supports, and the REACH Statewide Initiative -- as well as our regional SEL Hubs and Community Partnership Grants -- provides schools with the tools they need to foster a supportive environment for both students and staff.”
