Sami Parliament in Finland Publishes Digital Guide for Responsible Tourism in Lapland

The Sami Parliament in Finland has published a digital guide to responsible tourism in Lapland in hopes it will encourage visitors to travel ethically and sustainably in Indigenous regions of the country’s Arctic. “I hope the visitor guidance for Sami tourism will be widely used and it benefits as many stakeholders as possible,” Leo Aikio, the II Vice President of Sami Parliament in Finland, said in a statement.

Energy, Maritime Leaders to Convene for DOE InnovationXLab Summit

Top scientists and officials from government, academia, Alaskan Native communities, and industry are heading to the Dena’ina Center in Anchorage, Alaska, to focus on driving energy technologies for a more sustainable Arctic region. Arctic XLab, part of the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) ongoing InnovationXLab series, will showcase emerging innovations and scientific capabilities from DOE national laboratories that could address challenges in energy resiliency and the maritime industry.

Sensing Iceland’s Most Active Volcano with a “Buried Hair”

Icelandic legend tells of an outlaw named Grímur who hid in the highlands of the island after avenging the murder of his father. A widow assisted him, directing him to some remote lakes where he could sustain himself by fishing. However, there was already a giant living near the lakes. Grímur fought and killed the giant, so upsetting the giant’s daughter that she laid a curse on the landscape. From then on, fires would burn in the lakes and the surrounding woods would vanish.

Russia's Newest Strategic Sub Shoots Torpedos Through Arctic Ice

The brand new strategic Borei-class sub has taken part in a series of exercises aimed at preparing vessel and crew for Arctic operations. According to the Northern Fleet, the Knyaz Oleg last week engaged in torpedo shooting at a closed shooting range in the Barents Sea. The training was to prepare the crew for opening of holes in the Arctic sea-ice for vessel emersion.
