News from SCRLC
Underground Railroad Materials
SCRLC is interested in developing an exhibit about the Underground Railroad in our 14-county region, much like we did for Hurricane Agnes. Do you have collection materials or other resources that could be pulled together for such a project? Please email me!
New Collection: Hanna-Barben Collection
This collection was donated to the Canal Society of New York State by longtime Seneca Falls residents. The photos are of the Goulds Pump factory in Seneca Falls in 1914, and show not just the immense machinery, but also the workers in every part of the building. This collection is great to pair with the scrapbook about Gould's Pumps from the Seneca Falls Library collection.
New Collection: Schuyler County Waterfalls
Schuyler County is home to dozens of beautiful waterfalls, and this collection from the Schuyler County Historical Society captures some of them as they appeared and were visited over a century ago.
New Collection: Women of Cayuga County
The General File of photographs in the Cayuga County Historian's Office includes hundreds of studio portraits and candid shots of residents collected over the decades. This digital collection shows every woman found in that General File of photographs. It's notable for modern viewers that this just totals 69 images, and many of the women are identified as "Mrs. [husband's name]" only. The collection also includes a 19th century dress shop from Auburn's Genesee Street, members of the activist Sherwood family, women exercising at the WEIU (before it merged with the YMCA), and Girl Scouts.
New Collection: Women's Suffrage Petitions
Cayuga Museum of History and Art digitized the smaller of their women's suffrage petition rolls from the 1890s. The petitions are from small communities in Cayuga, Allegany, Greene and Suffolk counties.

Grants & Assistance
NEH Preservation Assistance Grants for Smaller Institutions
Apply for up to $10,000 from the National Endowment for the Humanities specifically for preservation efforts. It can pay for professional development, supplies, equipment, and more over 18 months. The deadline is January 11, 2024 for work to begin next fall.
Save America's Treasures Grants
Apply for preservation projects for a building that's on the National Register of Historic Places (or is a National Historic Landmark) or apply for projects involving your collections. The annual grant requires a 1:1 match, with projects ranging between $25,000 and $750,000, and is due December 19. Recent awardees from our region include the Seward House Museum (2020) and Cornell University.
Museum Association Conference Scholarships
MANY's 2023 conference will be in Albany, April 6-9. They have a long list of scholarships you can apply for to offset the cost to attend.
Libraries Transform Communities Engagement Grant
This is $2,000 for a school, public, academic, tribal or special library to expand its community engagement efforts. There will only be two grants awarded, so it is competitive, but the exercise of writing a grant and brainstorming activities will surely be worthwhile for your 2024 plans.
Reading & Discussion Program Grants
Apply to HumanitiesNY for a grant to pay for a facilitator to lead a 4-6 session series of reading discussions in the spring. HumanitiesNY will send you 15 copies of a book to use. The themes are broad and historical, perfect to tie in with other exhibits and events you have. Apply by December 11.

Digital Curation Resources from UMaine
As I sifted through things to include in this newsletter, like DPOE emails, I saw some names I recognized from my alma mater and got excited. Exactly one rabbit hole later, I found a departmental website all about digital curation, which links some free webinar recordings about digital permanence, web archiving, and generative AI: https://digitalcuration.umaine.edu/
Get Involved in SAA
The Society of American Archivists is looking for new volunteers and committee members. Submit a "leadership self-nomination form" by December 15.
Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Academic Libraries
The Journal of Academic Librarianship has a call for manuscripts right now. Submit your paper about equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives, practices, or programs at academic libraries by April 1.

Promoting Digital Scholarship on Campus
Binghamton University librarians are making great strides in outreach, having recognized a disconnect: people on campus knew the phrase "digital scholarship" and even knew the librarians working on the team, but didn't really know what the phrase meant or how they should participate. The librarians interviewed faculty, staff and graduate students and compiled their findings in a digestible blog post here.
