Greetings, SCS Family!

As we prepare our hearts for the holidays, I want to remind you: In Memphis-Shelby County Schools, we believe “Literacy is Life.”

One of the top priorities of Reimagining 901 is to strengthen early and continuing literacy. It’s not breaking news to say we realize just how critical literacy is to the long-term success for students throughout their education. That’s why we developed the Third Grade Commitment to outline precisely how we will ensure that our students are strong readers upon entering 3rd grade. But I feel I need to place the Third Grade Commitment back on everyone’s mind, because even though we solidified our commitment BEFORE the pandemic, a Special Legislative Session brought about increased accountability for students at the conclusion of 3rd grade.

To this end, our teams in academics and communications have put together and promoted literacy exercises for our younger learners that I hope families will take advantage of over the holidays.

The 3rd Grade Commitment isn’t about retention or failing students, it’s about ensuring a path to promotion and making sure all students have the reading skills they will need in the 3rd grade.

So please, understand your role as it pertains to the Third Grade Commitment and do your part to ensure ALL our students are reading ready by 3rd grade.
Please stay engaged and informed!
Let’s set our students up for SUCCESS NOW!

Together, we must believe.
Together, we will achieve.
Together, we are reimagining 901!

Sincerely,

Dr. Joris M. Ray, Superintendent
