PLEASE HELP US SPREAD THE WORD - PRE-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS FOR INDIGENOUS STUDENTS

We would like to ask for your help in spreading the word about this opportunity for Indigenous graduate students at universities other than Queen’s by forwarding the information and/or website link below to anyone who may be interested or supervising someone who may be interested.

The Faculty of Arts and Science has extended the application deadline for the one-year Pre-doctoral Fellowships for Indigenous Students for students outside of Queen’s to November 22. The Fellowships are open to Indigenous students enrolled in a PhD program and working on doctoral research in the creative arts, humanities, social sciences, or natural and physical sciences at an accredited university other than Queen's University. Candidates must have completed all doctoral degree requirements except the final doctoral project (e.g. dissertation). They will be expected to complete their doctoral project during their tenure as a Fellow to receive their degree from their home institution.

The Fellowship holder is required to relocate to Kingston while completing their research in order to teach one course in the Faculty of Arts and Science and contribute to intellectual life at Queen's University. The award includes a $37,000 annual stipend, as well as wages for teaching one class, and funds for relocation, research & conferences.

The Fellowships start in January 2022.
For more information visit the Faculty of Arts and Science website.
EXPLORING BEST PRACTICES TO SUPPORTING INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS WORKSHOP

Coming from different cultural, educational, and linguistic backgrounds, international students encounter challenges with learning at Queen’s. In this workshop on Tuesday, November 9, from 10:30 am until noon, participants will work together to explore the anticipated challenges faced by international students and identify best practices that help enhance the students’ academic experience and success.

THRIVE WEEK

Taking place from November 1 to 5, Thrive Week is a campus-wide initiative designed to promote positive mental health for all students, faculty, and staff and includes a series of events focused on building positive mental health. Thrive is also a mindset. We all have mental health, and we can each strengthen our mental health by learning about it, thinking about it, talking about it, and discovering new skills and resources to help us Thrive all year long.

WELCOMING CHANGE INTO YOUR LIFE WEBINAR

With a focus on change as a natural part of life, this LifeWorks webinar on Friday, November 12 at noon will help participants understand different types of change, develop strategies for managing change effectively, and ultimately view change in more positive ways.

UPDATE ON PROVINCIAL GUIDELINES

The provincial government recently announced the Plan to Safely Reopen Ontario and Manage COVID-19 for the Long-Term. This plan outlines Ontario’s approach to slowly lifting remaining public health and workplace safety measures over the next six months. As of October 25, capacity limits have been lifted in most settings where proof of vaccination is required, such as restaurants and sports facilities.

Below is a summary of the upcoming changes at this time:

  • Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC) - As of Friday, October 29, masks are required in the ARC at all times, except while performing physical activity. Please see the ARC website for further changes to facility protocols.
  • Eating and Drinking on Campus - Seating capacities in dining halls and retail food outlets will be increased over the next few weeks. The new regulations may make it possible for more options for eating and drinking in certain buildings; however, vaccination status will need to be confirmed to access these spaces. Further details on additional designated eating and drinking spaces on campus will be communicated by faculties and schools as soon as possible.
  • Student-Led On-Campus Activities - As the university has now successfully transitioned to in-person academic activities, the Co-Curricular Restart Advisory Group (CRAG) will be dissolved and approval of student-led co-curricular activities and events will follow the usual event sanctioning process through the AMS and SGPS. The AMS and SGPS have worked closely with the Executive Director, Risk and Safety Services to develop additional criteria, in alignment with the government regulations under Step 3, for their non-academic activity approval process to help mitigate the risk of COVID-19 transmission. Please note that on-campus non-academic activities continue to be limited to 25 people indoors and 100 people outdoors for the time being and all attendees must comply with Queen’s COVID-19 Vaccination Policy. Review of the new government regulations will direct any changes to the criteria for non-academic activities on-campus and the Queen’s Fall 2021 Event Planning Guidelines.
