WEAA celebrates its 151st anniversary. The organization was founded in 1871 by Frances Willard and eight other women who were committed to supporting young women scholars at NU in need of financial assistance. Frances Willard was best known as an American educator, temperance reformer, and women's suffragist. She became the national president of Woman's Christian Temperance Union in 1879 and remained president until her death in 1898.
Today, our vision and mission continues to be investing in NU women scholars by providing scholarships and mentoring. A bust of Frances Willard is on display on the second floor, outside of the NU Deering Library. Click here to read our vision and mission and history..
In 2019 WEAA started strategic planning to strengthen the board and completed our plans at the end of 2021. Our strategy work focused on reorganizing committees and writing policy to guide our work. Looking forward, we will focus on increasing opportunities for scholar engagement and the launching campaign videos for new board members and donations. You can be a part of our work by becoming a board member if you live within the Chicago area, or by donating to support current and future WEAA scholars.
