SONC's Movies in the Park Series
As we continue to navigate our COVID coexistence, we are pleased to announce the return of SONC's summer Movies in the Park Series, a family-friendly event held on the east side of Van Nuys Sherman Oaks Park, near the Hazeltine softball fields, on three summer Saturdays—June 25, July 23, and August 20. The event, organized by the Outreach Committee, will begin no earlier than 6pm and we will do our best to coordinate the movie's start time with sunset.
No RSVP is required to attend this free event and Movies in the Park is held outdoors, so please dress accordingly. Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets to sit on, and picnics if you wish to have a meal. There will be ample room for social distancing. VNSO will sell additional refreshments.

SONC Committees - Get Involved
Did you know SONC is comprised of community members seeking to get involved in local government and that committee membership is open to any Sherman Oaks stakeholder? Although board members are generally elected by the community, committee members are generally selected by each specific committee's chairperson.
If you are interested in getting involved in making a difference in Sherman Oaks, we have set up a Stakeholder Interest Form for committees and encourage you to fill out the form. SONC's committees include Education, Finance, Government Affairs, Green & Sustainability, Outreach, Planning and Land Use (PLUM) / Vision, Public Safety, and Transportation.
In addition, we are presently developing a new Human Services committee focusing on various community issues and are actively seeking new members for that committee.
June 7, 2022 Statewide Direct Primary Election
Lastly, if you have not yet done so, I encourage you to vote in the June 7, 2022 Statewide Direct Primary Election. Even if you have not yet registered or requested a ballot, voting centers will offer provisional ballots through election day. Mail-in ballots may be returned via USPS mail, or at Vote Drop Boxes, such as the collection box in the parking lot of the Sherman Oaks Martin Pollard Branch Library (14245 Moorpark St).
In-person voting takes place at the Sherman Oaks East Valley Adult Center (5056 Van Nuys Blvd) beginning May 28 and will continue through election day. Hours are 10am through 7pm daily, with extended hours of 7am-8pm on election day, June 7. Additionally, Sherman Oaks Elementary Charter (14755 Greenleaf St) will offer in-person voting from June 4-7 with the same hours. Visit LAVote.gov for more information.

Virtual SONC Meetings – Join Us
On March 12, 2020, the City of Los Angeles, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, suspended all meetings, activities, and events of SONC. In May 2020, SONC began to hold “virtual” meetings. These “virtual” meetings are held by way of video teleconferences using the Zoom platform.

SONC Outreach Committee

The big news for June from our Outreach Committee is the return of the Summer Movie Series that will be conducted at the Van Nuys Sherman Oaks War Memorial Park. As mentioned in Lindsay Imber's President's message there will be 3 screenings taking place, open to all residents, with free admission. Since it normally does not get dark until around 7:45 PM, we are also arranging for some pre-screening entertainment and surprises. The first film to be shown is Walt Disney's 2021 animated feature "Encanto", with songs and lyrics created by composer and rapper Lin-Manuel Miranda. See the flier included above for more details.
Other projects in the Outreach Committee pipeline include pre-planning for the 2023 Neighborhood Council elections that will formally kick off this November. SONC will be seeking a slate of candidates to contend for 10 seats across areas 2, 4, and 6 as well as 1 currently vacant seat in Area 1. If you are interested in running for a seat, please watch this space, or visit our web site to keep informed of the application filing deadlines. In 2022-23, the City Clerk will be using a hybrid election model for NC elections that provides for both polling place voting as well as the option to Vote-By-Mail. Voting deadline for SONC elections will be Thursday, June 22, 2023.
SONC is partnering with the Sherman Oaks Chamber Foundation, and the LADOT to find a local artist interested in creating an original design to paint onto a utility box in Sherman Oaks located at the corner of Van Nuys and Ventura Blvd. In partnership with Council District 4, the foundation has already painted over 90 utility boxes. In May, the Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council Planning & Land Use Committee (PLUM) reviewed the proposed request for a drive-thru fast-food restaurant at 5043 Van Nuys Blvd., the old Corky’s site. Though we recommended not approving the drive-through aspect of the Chick-fil A proposal, we do support a dine-in restaurant. Our committee has proposed to work with the applicant, the Council Office, and the community to find a solution for this site that restores the historic building and is appropriately sensitive to the adjoining residential area.
At the upcoming June 16 PLUM meeting we will be reviewing the Woodman Restaurant and the remodel and addition to the Rive Gauche restaurant site.
Please join us and attend our virtual meetings. Vision meets at 6:30 on the first Thursday of the month and PLUM at 6:30 on the third Thursday. We will be discussing topics such as the Community Plan Updates, Metro, the State housing bills and real solutions to the affordable housing crisis.

YES, as individuals we CAN make a difference. This is a great time to think about what YOU can do to protect the environment. If you are new to sustainability, choose goals that are achievable and important to you. If you are a sustainability expert, share your knowledge and encourage your friends and neighbors to become more earth friendly. Living a sustainable lifestyle can help our environment AND save money.
Eliminate food waste. Thirty to forty percent of food is wasted and ends up in landfills where it produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas which is 28 times stronger than carbon dioxide.

- Understand how much water was used to grow the food, and how much fuel was used to transport the food you throw away.

Recycle!
Make earth-friendly investments.

The May SONC Public Safety meeting featured a discussion with Patrick Botz-Forbes from the Neighborhood Team Program ("NTP") who has dedicated his efforts on setting up neighborhood Disaster Response Drills around the City and the importance of establishing these local Staging Areas before a disaster strikes. |

SONC recently supported a grant to purchase a Staging Area Kit for Sherman Oaks residents and when it is operational – CERT, SONC and the NTP will host its first Sherman Oaks drill.
Our Helpful Safety Tip of the month came from Senior Lead Officer Romo who suggests:
- Drivers entering their parking structure/garage should wait for the gate to fully close before entering/exiting.
- Drivers take their garage remote clickers when exiting the vehicle.
- Everyone to research ways to lock a mailbox.

Budget Day: You Are Invited!
All people residing in or doing business in the City of Los Angeles are invited to the Budget Advocates’ premier event – Budget Day 2022 on Saturday, June 18th. The time is 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for the Plenary Session, and 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for the Regional Breakout Sessions. The theme is, “Which Way L.A.?”

Listen to City leaders explain the Los Angeles City Budget for the coming fiscal year and the way it will impact the services we expect the City to provide in return for our tax dollars.
Learn how the City will use these revenues to pay for public safety (police, fire, and emergency services), public works (sanitation, street services), recreation and parks, library, animal services and those taking care of our money (City Administrative Officer, Finance, City Controller).
The City plans to increase funds for Personnel and Information Technology to ease bottlenecks and improve access both to and between departments. And how the City intends to turn the tide on homelessness.
Participate in Regional Breakout Sessions to share the concerns and issues of your neighborhood so the Budget Advocates can address these in their work during the coming year and underline their importance when they meet with City Departments, the City Council’s Budget and Finance Committee, and with City officials.
The Budget Advocates are an elected, all volunteer, independent advisory body tasked with making constructive recommendations to the Mayor and the City Council regarding the Budget, and to City Departments on ways to improve their operations. Their mission also includes obtaining input, updating and educating all Angelenos on the City’s fiscal management. In May I stepped down as SONC president and assumed the position of Treasurer for the Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council (SONC). The approach of the end of the Fiscal Year and certain administrative requirements made it essential that SONC be able to follow through with Neighborhood Purposes Grants and other disbursements approved by the SONC Board. I look forward to this new role with SONC.
Please join me in supporting and congratulating SONC’s new President, Lindsay Imber, as she takes on the leadership role of SONC.
Thank you for being an engaged and supportive member of our Sherman Oaks community and of the San Fernando Valley.

The SONC Education Committee is dedicated to establishing and supporting programs and volunteer resources related to education. The Education Committee is committed to supporting our Sherman Oaks educators, families, and community leaders. Monthly meetings provide an open, welcoming forum for stakeholders to get involved in helping the Education Committee to make a positive impact in the community and to build stronger connections.
Recently, the Education Committee has partnered with Chandler Elementary School to increase school beautification efforts. With a garden project underway, students can expect to gain access to a green space in an urban environment. Kester Elementary School has also implemented a mindfulness program for students and faculty. With weekly sessions, positive mental health behaviors are reinforced in order to meet the socioemotional needs of students. These programs are supported in part with funds provided by SONC Neighborhood Purposes Grants (NPG's).
With these two pilot programs, it is the committee's hope that these efforts will expand across the neighborhood to other Sherman Oaks schools. The mentor schools are expected to provide feedback regarding their respective programs so that improvements can be made over time. Our primary goal is to establish a collaborative network that provides access to these crucial resources to all students in the area.

Now through June 2022, adults aged 60+ living in the City of Los Angeles can get up to 2 meals delivered per day to their home from the Department of Aging’s emergency supplemental meal program for seniors.

The meal service is as follows: 1 "meal box" is 7 meals consisting of breakfast and lunch. Meal boxes are either delivered weekly or 2 meal boxes can be delivered 2 times a week for a total of 14 meals. A robo-call, text, or email will be made to each client the day before each delivery.

Homeless Clothing Drive
The Office of Councilmember Nithya Raman is hosting a Homelessness Clothing Donation Drive with NoHo Home Alliance and Hope of the Valley on Saturday, July 9 from 10:00AM-1:00PM at the Woodman Entrance of Notre Dame High. Please donate new or lightly used men's clothing (t-shirts, sweatshirts, pants, underwear, socks, etc.), hygiene products, and backpacks.

Onto some updates:
We have all been impacted by the tragic news in Ulvalde, Texas. Superintendent Carvalho announced expanded safety protocols for schools in response to the shooting. Please read more about it here. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and school community affected by this tragedy.
Summer school enrollment is currently underway and there are still spots available. Board District 3 schools offering TK-8 Summer schools are Columbus Elementary, Hazeltine Elementary, and Van Nuys Middle School. Aside from these options Beyond the Bell is offering Summer Enrichment courses as well. You can learn more about summer school here.
LAUSD is hosting a job fair to be held on Wednesday, June 15 from 10 AM to 2 PM at the West Valley Occupation Center (6200 Winnetka Ave, Woodland Hills, CA 91367). Interested persons may click here to sign-up.
Nate Shin from Hollywood High School is the newly elected Student Board Member for the 2022-23 school year. We are so proud to have another student representative from the Valley!
Speaking of student representatives, Board Member Schmerelson’s Student Advisory Council had their last meeting of the school year in May. Students worked in groups on Capstone Projects. They had the opportunity to present their Capstone to Superintendent Carvalho and Local District Superintendent Chait. If you know of any LAUSD high School students in Board District 3 who would be interested in applying for the 2022-23 Student Advisory Council, the application will be available in August.
Board Member Schmerelson’s Family and Community Engagement Committee (FCE) will convene their last meeting on Thursday, June 16th at 5pm. The FCE committee will be learning more about the Fareless System Initiative, a relatively new partnership between the LA Metro and LAUSD, that allows our students to ride the Metro for free. They are also going to be joined by the Food Services Division to discuss what works and what can be improved in the cafeteria. If either of these topics are of interest, I encourage you to tune-in. Please allow me to share some personal news. I gave birth to my son, Josiah Camarillo Ramirez on March 31st at 11:55pm. At birth he weighed 7lb 4.5 oz and was 19 inches long. Thank you for all your well wishes!
Lastly, I would like to announce that I will be transitioning out of this position at the end of the month. It truly has been such an honor to serve and work with you in my role as field representative for Board District 3. I admire the passion you hold for your respective communities. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your community. In the meantime, please expect updates from me through June.

Community Update Webinar Thursday, June 16, 2022
Metro invites you to attend a virtual community meeting where they will provide an update on the recently completed public scoping period for the Sepulveda Pass Rapid Transit project, which was the first step in the environmental review process. They are finalizing the Scoping Summary Report and will release it prior to the meeting where the findings will be discussed. Metro will also provide an update on the status of the environmental study, next steps, and respond to questions.

Free Sustainability Webinars From

A series of free webinars to beautify your home and garden is being offered during the month of June by the LA County Dept. of Public Works. The Smart Gardening Webinars are approximately 45 minutes long followed by a 15-minute period to answer questions and take orders for compost bins. For those who are unable to attend, they have posted videos of the sessions. There are four core subjects being offered:
Intro to Composting: Learn about backyard and worm composting to create a rich soil amendment to nourish your garden.
Water-wise Gardening: Create a beautiful drought-tolerant landscape and learn about grasscycling to fortify your lawn.
Organic Gardening: Build healthy soil, grow herbs and vegetables, and address plant pests and diseases using organic methods.
Small-space Gardening: Learn to grow plants in containers and set up a small-space worm composting system.

In a press release shared April 21, 2022, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced that masks will continue to be required on any public transportation within Los Angeles County. This includes buses, subways, trains, taxis, and ride-shares. Masks will also continue to be required within transit stations, airports, terminals, and any other indoor area serving as a transportation hub. |

Los Angeles Dept. of Water & Power is Offering Free Landscaping Design Services to Transform Your Turf
|
|
Are you interested in saving water and money on your bill? As an LADWP customer, you can get free landscape design services for transforming your landscape to be more drought tolerant. The design can be submitted along with your turf replacement rebate application. Planting and irrigation plans are provided at no cost to LADWP customers who wish to remove turf and replace it with low water use California Friendly® and native plants. The rebates for removing lawns and water hungry plantings are still in effect. With the coming hot summer months, and new watering rules going into effect, the time is right to replace.
The provided plans can be given directly to a licensed contractor for installation and also included is a simple guide on how to best hire a landscape contractor. The plans will include a storm water capture feature, such as a rain garden, in the design. Irrigation plans include use of water efficient drip irrigation systems.
Your newly installed garden will capture and reuse stormwater, recharge groundwater, prevent polluted runoff from flowing to the rivers and ocean, and provide food and habitat for birds, butterflies and other wildlife. Once your newly installed plants have been established, you will see the savings on your water bill.

Then & Now... the Changing Face of Sherman Oaks
Our neighborhood's history is filled with notoriety. Some good, some bad. In 1957 Rondelli's Neapolitan style restaurant opened in the space located at 13359 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks. Today that same space houses the California style restaurant Wood & Water Kitchen. Over the years, the location hosted several eating establishments including a European style restaurant called Le Fondue Bourguignonne, and for a brief time an eatery named Stir.
When Rondelli's was there, many famous Hollywood actors and actresses frequented the establishment, including Academy award winner Ernest Borgnine, Jane Withers…and others. Rondelli's also had a reputation for being a mafia hangout, and in 1959, became notorious when a bookie named Jack "The Enforcer" Whalen took a bullet between the eyes at mobster Mickey Cohen's table. Then Chief of Police William Parker took personal charge of the Whalen murder investigation, which turned up evidence including a gun belonging to Cohen bodyguard Johnny Stompanato in a trash bin behind the restaurant.
Yes, that Johnny Stompanato! If the name sounds familiar, it's because Johnnie Stompanato was also the boyfriend who was stabbed to death in the boudoir of actress Lana Turner, allegedly by her 14-year old daughter Cheryl Crane.
Although Mickey Cohen was booked for the Whalen murder, he was released when an associate copped to the deed, but later he was indicted on new evidence. Cohen's trial ended in a hung jury. Rondelli's closed shortly after the shooting.
