Lighting Up the Holidays:
Trees Honor Marshall Plan Legacy
After a week-long whirlwind of arranging, placing and decorating 18 trees, the second annual Marshall Plan Tree Walk opened for visitors on December 4 at our official lighting ceremony. Marshall Center board member Tom Greenspon opened the event with brief but powerful remarks on the historical significance of the countries that participated in the European Recovery Act after World War II. Leesburg Mayor Kelly Burk then led the crowd in a countdown for the lights to come alive.

Every tree was displayed thanks to a local sponsor, and each is commemorated with a sign created and donated by O.G. Media.
We wish to sincerely thank our tree sponsors:

Another Season in the Books
After another successful season of house tours, Dodona Manor closed its doors for the winter on December 19. Since March, we received over 1,500 visitors for over 500 tours. We look forward to re-opening in March 2022 to continue sharing Marshall’s story at the place where he lived while making history. We’d like to thank our faithful docents for rising to the occasion once again this year to play a key role in carrying on Marshall’s legacy.

The 75-Year Celebration Begins

On June 5, 1947, George Marshall delivered a speech at Harvard University that publicly introduced the most ambitious American foreign policy initiatives of the twentieth century. This speech was the official kick-off of the long campaign to develop, promote and implement the European Recovery Act, which history knows as the Marshall Plan. The influx of American resources to the 17 Marshall Plan nations helped restore their economies… and their confidence. The plan shored up democracy at a time when it seemed in peril, and it shaped the world order we experience today.

The new year marks the 75th anniversary of this seminal moment, the moment when George C. Marshall’s singular skills as an ethical leader both contributed to a plan that would work and generated the broad public and political support it needed to pass Congressional muster. It was his finest hour.

The Marshall Center is dedicated to the proposition that our nation and our world can still benefit from his example. It is in that spirit that we are preparing to dedicate our work in 2022 to “Celebrating 75 Years of the Marshall Plan.”

Stay tuned for the special events we have lined up for this year to celebrate this milestone in Marshall history.
College Scholarships Available
to Five-Star Character Participants
With the holidays behind us, we’re moving full steam ahead toward the next edition of Five-Star Character: The George C. Marshall Ethical Leadership Conference. We’re excited to announce that students who participate in this program are eligible to compete for a $5000 college scholarship.

Seats for both our January and February sessions are still available, but space is limited to 20 students per session. Apply or refer a student today to secure a spot.

This program is created to inspire and develop leaders among high school juniors and seniors. This event gives students the opportunity to shape their approach to leadership and decision-making drawing on the life of one of the most remarkable and influential leaders in American history.

The conference leverages lessons from the life and example of George C. Marshall, whose life as a soldier and statesman serves as a positive and timeless model of effective ethical leadership and “five-star character.” Using examples from Marshall’s long career of service, participants learn and apply these enduring lessons in a modern context.
