We are very proud to share that Jefferson Elementary School is being recognized as a 2023 California Distinguished School. This is an exceptional achievement! This program recognizes schools for their excellent work in closing the achievement gap and achieving exceptional student performance. The California Distinguished School Award is a direct result of the collective dedication and hard work of our entire school community. Teacher, student, parent, and staff support, dedication, and hard work are integral to the Jefferson culture and we are delighted to share this recognition with everyone. Way to go Jefferson!!

Does your child have a great poster describing a bit of your culture and she/he would like to share it?

Do you have some yummy desserts that will best represent the country your family is from?

Is your child dressing up for their Ancestry project and you would love for them to wear that outfit again?

JANUARY 16 - CELEBRATING MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY

On Monday, January 16, we celebrate the life and legacy of Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. who advocated the use of nonviolent means to end racial segregation.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is one of the most influential of African American civil rights leaders during the 1960s and was instrumental in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which outlawed discrimination in public accommodations, facilities, and employment, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Dr. King was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1964.

He was assassinated on April 4, 1968.

The California African American Museum celebrates this special day with a full day of programs for kids, teens and their families.

Drop in to enjoy open galleries and special programs offered throughout the day, including a King family story time with the Los Angeles Public Library, a King speech study group, and a performance by members of the Inner City Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (ICYOLA), the largest majority African American orchestra in America.
