Greetings! here is your monthly CMC Foundation news update

The 2022 Olympic Winter Games are upon us, and Colorado Mountain College is once again well-represented as the world’s best athletes compete for gold in Beijing. New to the Olympic stage is CMC student Zoe Kalapos. The up-and-coming snowboarder will show off her best tricks as she carves down the halfpipe. The Vail resident is currently earning an associate degree at the CMC Vail Valley at Edwards campus. CMC graduates Alex Ferreira (ski halfpipe), Mick Dierdorff (snowboard cross) and Katie Uhlaender (skeleton) are all returning Olympians in 2022. Each is in strong contention to medal in their respective events.

“There are no words for how grateful I am for the support, understanding and encouragement I got to complete my associate degree,” Uhlaender wrote on the college’s commencement website. “CMC has taught me it is worth reaching for the stars. Even if you don't make it, you'll go higher than you ever expected.”

The Leadville campus recently placed two students in a summer internship program where they gained hands-on experience learning construction skills from an area contractor. Justin Ernst, co-owner of Downstream Construction, oversaw the two student interns.

"It worked well," Ernst said. "We counted on them being productive when they were on-site and they did a great job. And it was refreshing for those of us who've been doing this for a while to have a fresh look at how we do things."

"It's a good opportunity for students looking for a different job and a chance to learn the skills they need," Ernst said. "It's a great example of how CMC is tied into the community. It's an awesome program."

"We hope to get it up to around 16 students over two semesters, split between in-class and on-site internships."

CMC trustees unanimously approved the addition of a Bachelor of Arts in human services, with three related minor fields in behavioral studies, addictions or psychology. The need for the degree followed a two-year feasibility study that explored regional and national demand for mental and behavioral health professionals.

“This new degree aims to meet the tsunami of need for mental health and addiction support in our mountain communities,” said CMC Dean Dr. Anne Moll, School of Humanities, Social Science, Sustainability and Education. “Graduates will be in very high demand for a wide range of well-paying behavioral support positions and will be prepared to enroll in graduate-level programs in psychology, social work, counseling, addictions, behavioral and public health.”

“The Animal Dialogues: Uncommon Encounters in the Wild” by Colorado writer, naturalist and adventurer Craig Childs, is Colorado Mountain College’s selection for 2022’s Common Reader.

The book, which chronicles over 30 experiences and observations Childs has had with a diverse variety of animals, is not meant to be read in sequential order or in one sitting, according to the author. Rather, the book tells stories of animals – from the mountain lion to the mosquito – inviting the reader to discover more about the many species who share the planet with humans.

Now in its 15th year, CMC’s Common Reader brings together faculty, students, staff and community members to read a selected book together and to participate in talks with the author. Talks with Childs will be held at eight of the college’s campuses from March 22-31.
