Trinity Trumpeter | January 21, 2022
Hey Friend!

In 2019, a visioning team started meeting with Rev. Bill Kierce, the Alabama-West Florida Annual Conference’s Director of Congregational Development and Vitality. During these meetings, Bill recommended that the team start looking at moving to two services. This recommendation led to a survey being sent out by the church council for you, the congregation, to provide feedback. We received 158 completed surveys. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feedback! Your input is vital to the church council’s decision-making process. We received a variety of responses and wanted to clarify a few questions.

Why move to two services?
We desire to have passionate worship services that glorify God. We have the statistics from our worship attendance going back about seven years that show that Sunday attendance has been steadily declining since 2015. Yes, 2020 was a challenging year with COVID; however, COVID is not the only reason for our decline. Last year, we were still 44% below our average attendance levels of 2019. This decline is happening at Trinity and throughout almost every church in America.

Who is experiencing burnout?
It is primarily the few volunteers serving and some of the staff that graciously fills in the gaps that are experiencing burnout. As in most organizations, it appears we have 20% of the people doing 80% of the work. Our goal is for every person who attends Sunday worship to volunteer to serve in some form. We hope to have enough volunteers serving in a consistent rotation to prevent burnout .

Is there a schedule set for the services?
No, not at this time. We intend to still have Sunday school even with two services. Small groups are essential and result in the growth of a church. They are a place for people to recharge, share how God is working in their lives, and maintain the strength to love others. Our goal is to have our Sunday school classes and small group ministries thrive.

When would this change occur, if and when it should happen?
The church council will make the decision, and it could happen as soon as this summer or in the fall when the new school year begins. I encourage you to continue to think about the question – what do you want this church to look like in the future?

Please address any additional question or comments to any church council member or the church office.

Thank you,

Debbie Hurt
Chair, Trinity UMC Church Council
