This Sunday we will receive a special offering for Presbyterian Disaster Assistance to respond to immediate and long-term needs of those in the Bahamas affected by Hurricane Dorian.

Gifts, which will be distributed through Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, can be made by using the Disaster Assistance envelopes in the pew racks on Sunday.

You can also make a gift to this offering by writing “Disaster Assistance” on the memo line of a check made payable to Fourth Presbyterian Church or online with PDA. Immediate assistance to vulnerable populations affected by the hurricane is also being provided by the Treasure Cay Community Foundation, which is receiving gifts online as well.
This Sunday we are launching “Foundation of Faith: A Year with the Bible,” an engaging new weekly Bible study that will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Taught by our Associate Pastors, it is designed for everyone with an interest in the Bible—whether you’re a biblical scholar or are unfamiliar with the text.

Each class will be self-contained, so you can attend as your schedule allows, and a reading list is posted online if you want to read along.

To get us started, we will be reading Genesis 1. Come join us in this biblical exploration!
The Fourth Church Racial Equity Council has a request and an invitation for you this month:

They ask that in the next two weeks you take time to complete a brief survey the results of which will help the council develop recommendations for our moving toward becoming a fully multicultural, antiracist church.

They also invite you to a celebration next Sunday, September 22 following the 11:00 a.m. service. At that time we will dedicate the stunning new painting The Ascension by Gerald Griffin (whose exhibit in the Loggia we hope you saw earlier this year!).

Commissioned by the Racial Equity Council, The Ascension, based on Acts and Revelation, will hang permanently in the Gignilliat Commons as we give public witness that people of all races are made in the image of God and celebrated in God’s multicultural, multiracial Beloved Community.

Mark your calendar and plan to bring your pets to the Michigan Avenue courtyard on Saturday, September 28.

We’ll be gathering that day at 10:00 a.m. for a Blessing of the Animals service of song and story, giving thanks to God for the creatures that bless our lives. All pets are welcome! (Please have them on leash or in a carrier.)

If you’d rather not bring your pets, please bring photographs of them and join us as we celebrate the wonders of God’s creation and our relationships with its creatures, great and small!
Three days each week our Fourth Church Meals Ministry program serves bag lunches to guests in our community who are experiencing hunger. In each of those lunches our volunteers include snack items, from granola bars to chips, pretzels, fruit cups, or applesauce.

The inclusion of those snacks is made possible by the donations of our members and friends, and while we are always grateful for much-needed Meals Ministry contributions throughout the year, this month in particular we could use your help replenishing our snack supply.

Donations (labeled “Meals Ministry”) can be dropped off during Coffee Hour any Sunday this month or at the reception desk on weekdays and Saturday.

Did you know that in order to fill the open positions of Elder, Deacon, Trustee, and Chicago Lights Board members, the Nominating Committee needs Fourth Church members to submit names of around 200 candidates?

So far we have 25 submissions and thus have 175 more to go by September 30.

If you’re wondering who should submit candidates for the slate, the answer is you! We want to hear from anyone who has a person—or themselves—to recommend.

Why not send your recommendations to the Nominating Committee today by completing this form online!
Might one of the following opportunities fit into your autumn schedule? We could use your help!

  • Ushers for the 8:00 and 11:00 a.m. worship services
  • Greeters for the 4:00 p.m. Jazz at Four service
  • 100 new tutors for our Chicago Lights Tutoring program, mentoring students one night a week at the church (learn more or sign up for orientation)

Unless otherwise noted, sign up or learn more by contacting Robert Crouch, Director of Volunteer Ministry.
