COVID Guidance
Current Status as of 8/12/2021

At this time, NYS is recommending that CDC guidance be followed. Current CDC guidance states:

To maximize protection from the Delta variant and prevent possibly spreading it to others, wear a mask indoors in public if you are in an area of substantial or high transmission.

Guidance is changing frequently. For the most up to date information, please visit the websites below.

It is recommended that all clubs have their players complete a COVID waiver for the upcoming season. The NYSW template can be found here.

U.S. Soccer Updates
Introducing the U.S. Soccer Player Status Department
The Player Status Department is responsible for the processing of all registration requests, both professional and amateur, as outlined in the FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players. The services provided and processed by Player Status are required to be compliant with FIFA regulations, thus the department is part of the Compliance Department of U.S. Soccer. One of those registration types is International Clearances.

INTERNATIONAL CLEARANCE REGISTRATION PROCESS UPDATE

The international clearance registration forms have been updated to reflect FIFA criteria/guidelines and streamline the process. Failure to adhere to instructions and criteria outlined will result in submission being rejected and/or processing delays. Updates include:
  • Detailed step-by-step instructions on how to submit for successful processing.
  • Explanation of who qualifies to submit under the selected form.
  • Completion criteria and list of required documents /format/file size for processing to occur.

One registration process which has been slightly modified is the age requirement for P10s. Continuing to process P10s for players aged 10 and older would open the Federation, members, leagues and clubs to risk and possibility of fines. Thus, P10s will be processed for qualifying players aged nine (9) and younger to bring the process in compliance with FIFA regulations.

Coach / Parent / Athlete Resources
Pandemic Had Many Young Athletes Reconsidering Their Sport
The pause in youth sports caused by the COVID-19 pandemic wound up shaking some budding athletes to their core, a new U.S. survey shows.

More than 1 in 10 youth athletes ended up reconsidering their sports goals or aspirations as the pandemic closed stadiums and gyms. That included one-quarter of athletes in their later teens, researchers found.

Some felt that the pandemic cost them too many opportunities on the playing field, while others enjoyed the break from training so much they were reluctant to dive back in, said lead researcher Dr. Henry Ellis, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon and associate director of clinical research with Scottish Rite for Children Center for Excellence in Sports Medicine in Dallas.

How to Support a Diverse and Multi-Cultural Team
If you have a diverse group of student athletes, you may be wondering how to best support all of them at the same time in an increasingly complex social environment. These days, coaches are often expected to understand a huge variety of athlete experiences and use those experiences to help their athletes and sport program flourish.

José Miguel Burgos, head coach of the boys and girls soccer program and Spanish teacher at Catalyst Maria High School, runs an incredibly diverse program there. Burgos is also the inaugural winner of TrueSport and SportsEngine’s Champion Coach Recognition Program in 2019. His secret to success? Love. And a few other things. Here are his tips for supporting a diverse program.

State of Play 2021
Kids Need Play Now More Than Ever

Four in 10 children and adolescents who previously played sports face reduced services from their community-based sports provider or travel sports organization, according to a new Aspen Institute Project Play survey of parents. School sports programs have fared best during COVID-19, but also have been the most likely to return with limited services.
