— JUNE 2022 —
The Annual BHNA Clean-Up and Clear-Out Event
Spring has sprung and we are heading straight into summer. That means it’s time for the annual BHNA Clean-Up and Clear-Out event! Last year, we had a dumpster installed outside Mann Elementary School where residents could drop off their large unwanted items. We filled that dumpster quickly. This year we have expanded the event to include items to recycle and repurpose. Plus, a garbage truck will roam the neighborhood and pick up large items.

Starting at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 4 in the parking lot of Grace United Methodist Church at 275 Junipero Avenue, the Salvation Army will have a truck on hand to collect unwanted but useable items to be donated, as well as non-toxic e-waste. There will also be a trash dumpster, where you can dispose of things that are too large for your personal trash cans.

You can also place large items you want to dispose of at your curbside for the city garbage truck to pick up. The truck will be circulating through Bluff Heights from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Oversized items must be left curbside by 8:00 a.m. on June 4 only! (Note that this is only open to Bluff Heights residents.) You can find detailed guidelines on preparing your large items for curbside pickup on the Bluff Heights website.

Broadway Blooms with a New Flower Store

Rafael and Yanet Aldrete started Blooms on Broadway (2543 E. Broadway) a couple months ago as the second location of their business. (Their other store, Long Beach Flowers, opened two years ago at 2080 E. Pacific Coast Highway.) Yanet was born and raised in Long Beach and worked in a local flower shop during her final year of high school. She always loved it, she said, but decided to pursue a career in the dental field starting as a dental assistant.
Stopping to Smell the Roses (or Sweet Peas)

Spring drew on...and a greenness grew over those brown beds, which, freshening daily, suggested the thought that Hope traversed them at night, and left each morning brighter traces of her steps.”

Updating a Community Cookbook Part 2

As you may have seen in the April issue of our newsletter, I am in the midst of updating a community cookbook created by my mother, Coula Kootsikas, and her good friends and co-editors Bobbie Soupos and Amelia Ladas. They edited the first edition of Grecian Festival – by the Sea by collecting recipes from members of the Long Beach Greek Orthodox community.

Dog Ice Cream Social
On Saturday, June 4th from 3:00 PM–6:00 PM T.C. Raw Eats will be hosting an Ice Cream Social sponsored by Live Like Roo. There will be a cute little ice cream stand where the dogs can eat their ice cream cups. Check it out at Arrfscarf on Instagram. They are asking owners to post a pic with their pup and tag them on social media. T.C. Raw Eats will be passing out postcard flyers this week. Later that evening there is a first time event called Lights on Broadway from 6–10 PM.

Backyard Bounty
The second Sunday of the month is Backyard Bounty day in Bluff Heights. Share the bounty from your backyard by placing it in front of your house. Take a walk through the neighborhood, get a little exercise, and enjoy the bounty. Find the label HERE

4th of July Block Party
The 4th of July Block Party is back. All residents of Bluff Heights are invited to the Block Party on E. Vista Street between Orizaba and Obispo on Monday, July 4, from 12:00 – 5:00 PM! Call for Volunteers & Donations! This event cannot be accomplished without the generous volunteer help and financial support of our Bluff Heights residents and our local businesses. BHNA needs volunteers for various activities throughout the day on the 4th (setup, staffing activities, takedown, etc.). We welcome all the help we can get! If interested, send an email with your contact information to info@bluffheights.org.

Is it Time to Trim your Waste-Line?
It's really simple to trim your "Waste-Line!" All you need to do is collect your e-waste, hazardous waste, and/or old tire waste and bring it to one of three local collection centers under the conditions set by the City of Long Beach on this flyer.
You will feel much lighter now that you took care of those extra notches on your Waste-Line! Doesn't being a loser feel good?
