We’re thrilled to be selected for Morgan Stanley’s 2023 Strategy Challenge. This is a 10-week challenge where The Sato Project is working with a team of employees to address a key strategic question for our organization. We were assessed through a rigorous and competitive selection process alongside many great nonprofit organizations for the privilege to work with a team in this pro bono program.

We are honored to have been selected and humbled by the diverse skillsets and competencies of the group of employees working with us. Above is the team at our last Freedom Flight in White Plains, NY. They are learning all the different aspects of our organization to provide strategic recommendations.

Above is the announcement of our organization being selected for the Morgan Stanley 2023 Strategy Challenge. Our name and logo were displayed on the Morgan Stanley building in Times Square when we began the challenge last month.

We bring hundreds of satos into our program each year. We fully vet them, including testing for and protecting them from communicable diseases. After making sure they are healthy, spay/neutered, and microchipped, we look for a forever home so they can live the rest of their lives full of love and joy. It's hard to find local residents in Puerto Rico to adopt satos in our program. Sometimes it happens, but the vast majority of satos fly to the Northeast where they have a better chance of finding the home they were meant to be in.

On March 25th, we flew 40 satos from San Juan, Puerto Rico to White Plains, NY with Flying Zebra. These dogs were greeted with open arms and smiles. The photo above shows Lore being greeted by her adopter Leah, who was so excited to meet her at the airport and comfort her after her flight on the chartered plane. The life-saving journeys that each of these satos go through are fully funded by our community of supporters like you. CLICK HERE to help fund our life-changing rescue efforts for so many satos.

Mother’s Day is approaching and we can’t wait to celebrate all of the special sato mums we have in our lives, including Luna.

Luna is a mother that was saved from death row. This loving mother was at the municipal shelter in Ponce, Puerto Rico. We recognized her from our clinic held there two months earlier, but something was different—she was heavily pregnant! Soon after we brought her into our program, this 25-pound mom gave birth to a huge litter of ten puppies. She tested positive for heartworm and is going through our extensive heartworm treatment. She and her puppies are doing great.

We are dedicated to giving Luna the best life possible and finding a loving forever home to spend the rest of her life. Until then, Luna is available as a virtual foster through our Foster From Afar program, and would love some support until she finds a forever home. This is a great way to support the mums in our program.

As a virtual foster, you’ll receive a special digital postcard of Luna. You can share it on social media or print it to display proudly and think of your foster dog every day. We’ll also keep you updated on Luna’s progress. Click this link to foster Luna from afar!
Do you know someone who is interested in adopting? Forward this newsletter to them. If they find their soulmate in our program, they will always be grateful that you did. To see all of our adoptable dogs, CLICK HERE.

Draco goes home!

Draco was found under a parked car, hiding from the heat, at our vaccine clinic in January. He was alone and shut down and we knew we needed to bring him to safety. When we finished vaccinating the last dog of the day, our team sat down with him and gave him food, water and a walk. One of our staff members, Edgardo, named him Draco. We promised to find him a forever home that will love him endlessly.

Draco (now Mako) took his Freedom Flight last month to his forever home in the Big Apple. In just under a few weeks, Mako has settled in nicely. He’s taking long walks and exploring his new home with lots of puppy energy. He is even still figuring out what his reflection is and barks at the mirror! Pat, his adopter, says Mako really enjoys playing with his Star Wars toys– his favorite is a tie between Stormtrooper and Chewbacca.
And, Mako loves spending time with Pat. Mako’s a great cuddler and warmed up to Pat right away. Mako sleeps right at Pat’s feet while he’s working and is a great assistant. Pat says, “I think we're both the luckiest to have found each other and I love him so much!” This isn’t Mako’s happy ending, this is just the beginning to a wonderful life for this sweet sato.

The Sato Project is dedicated to rescuing abused and abandoned dogs in Puerto Rico, where there are an estimated 500,000 stray dogs and a combined euthanasia rate of 94% across all municipal shelters. In 10 years, we have rescued 6,500 dogs, rehabilitated them with the highest standards of veterinary care, and found them loving homes on the mainland U.S. We are also working to make permanent change on the island through community outreach and no-cost spay/neuter and vaccine programs.
