Dedication of Bicentennial Chalice and Paten

St. Brendan joined other congregations in the diocese in a moment of dedication and thanksgiving for the Bicentennial Chalice and Paten, specially commissioned for the diocese's Bicentennial celebration.

While the Diocese of Maine celebrated its 200th birthday in the year 2020, the year-long multi-event celebration was significantly changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, the chalice and paten sets made by ceramic artist Stephanie Rozene were distributed to churches.

Professor Rozene wrote, "I believe that the work is not finished until it is in use, and in this, I am honored that the work will be finished by everyone in the Diocese of Maine as they take part in the Eucharist. The colors are reminiscent of those that remind me of Maine, blue waters, green of the pines, and white porcelain for the preciousness of each life."
The Gratitude Corner
We are grateful to Agnes and Billy Love, Miriam Antich, and Pastor Elaine for braving the cold and planting garlic last Sunday. Their amazing efforts (yes, the ground was nearly frozen!) will yield garlic for our Simmering Pot soups next year.

This week's Simmering Pot crew produced 144 quarts of red lentil soup. This may be a record output! As always, we give thanks for this tireless group of volunteers who make this monthly meal possible.
From our Pastor
Remembering Matthew

The shooting last Saturday evening at the LGBTQ bar in Colorado which left five people dead, more than twenty-five people injured, and many families and friends grieving is yet one more example of our nation’s need for stricter gun control laws. But it also highlights a sharp rise in violence against people in the LGBTQ community.

Many of us wonder what we can do in response to this increased violence being waged against our LGBTQ neighbors. We will be considering this question in the coming weeks, and after consulting the larger Church and organizations working on justice for the LGBTQ community, we will offer some suggestions for involvement in our GPS Action Items.

But in this moment, we are providing a link to worship services being offered at the National Cathedral on December 1 to remember Matthew Shepard on what would have been his 46th birthday. Part of preparing ourselves for involvement in any justice effort is a preparation of heart, soul and mind centered in prayer, confession, communal lament, and hope. All work on behalf of justice begins here.

December 1 is also World AIDS Day. May we have the courage to follow our prayers to where they lead us as we remember Matthew Shepherd and all those who have suffered from AIDS.

GPS Action Item
A reading assignment this week to prepare for next weekend's visit by Canon Michael Ambler. Please look up http://www.restorationlaos.org  and read about the work of removing unexploded munitions from 10 years of US bombing in the tiny country of Laos. Michael will be with the St Brendans's congregation next Sunday, December 4 to preach and to share a presentation in the afternoon with the wider community about Restoration Laos.
Advent Vespers
Each of our Advent Vespers will give us the opportunity to listen to the Spirit of God not only in the silence but also in the sharing by our St. Brendan friends who will reflect on the question, “Where do you hear the sound of hope in these days?”

Join us on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. for this short contemplative service. Jane LaChance will offer the reflection. Feel welcome to come a little early to sit in silence. We will have the candles lit by 4:45.

The bulletin can be found here. Click below for the Zoom link.

Bible Study
Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.

We will begin our study of T.S. Eliot's "Four Quartets" on November 30th.

Critics acclaim “Four Quartets" as “one of the great poems of the 20th century.” They suggest the individual poems reflect a common theme: “man's relationship with time, the universe, and the divine.” We will read and discuss one poem each Wednesday. The series will be facilitated by Nathan Dane and Mickey Jacoba.

Please register by clicking on mickeyjacoba@gmail.comBackground material and discussion ideas
will be emailed to all participants before each meeting. The series continues on December 7th, 14th, and 21st in-person and on Zoom.

Scripture Notes
First Sunday in Advent

On this Advent Sunday, the liturgy is centered on the second Advent of Christ, when he will return as judge and establish the Kingdom of God. In today’s Gospel reading Jesus tells his followers that his return will be sudden and with no warning. Therefore, we are to live at all times as though his return is imminent.

In the first reading, the prophet Isaiah foresees that Kingdom as God’s reign over a united and peaceful humanity. All people will know themselves to be the children of God and brothers and sisters to all other people.

The second reading from Romans exhorts us to live as though we were in the last days. We are to live as though the Kingdom has come; shunning darkness and living in the light of God’s presence.

The Advent theme that points to Jesus’ first coming in his birth becomes the sign for us of the Advent yet to come. As we gather in the Eucharist, we find in our liturgical action a foretaste of the unity and peace of God’s Kingdom. We recognize that in this in-between time (between Jesus’ first coming and his second) we ourselves are caught up in the Eucharist into the Kingdom.
