Message From Lisa
November is most often thought of as the month of Thanksgiving. I love Thanksgiving and all the great fellowship with family and, of course, the great food! I can’t wait for some turkey and dressing followed by pumpkin pie! Whatever you do, please don’t eat that cranberry sauce out of a can. Making your own homemade cranberry sauce is easy and it’s so delicious. I am sharing my recipe below. You will never eat cranberry sauce out of a can again!

But November is also important to me because of Veteran’s Day. My dad was a career Navy man and veterans hold a very special place in my heart. We are very grateful and proud of the men and women who have served our country. At Lanier Law Group, we have several employees who served in our armed services. Marshall Chriscoe served in the United States Navy and Navy Reserves and now works as a paralegal in our Greensboro office. Patricia Harris served the United States Army and now works as a litigation paralegal in our Raleigh office.
Patricia Harris, U.S. Army
Michael Modhal, U.S. Army
Mike Modhal served in the United States Army and now works with disabled veterans here at Lanier Law Group helping them obtain benefits for service-related injuries and conditions. Ashley Hartman Sappenfield leads our veteran’s disability practice area. And Mike Modahl is our lead paralegal in this department. Mike is the primary point of contact for wounded warriors working with our firm to get the benefits they earned but have been denied.

Remember our veterans on November 11th. Let’s thank them for serving our country and protecting our freedom.

Lanier Law Group Argues on Behalf of Childhood Sexual Abuse Victims
When the North Carolina General Assembly passed the SAFE Child Act in 2019, one of its key provisions allowed anyone who was a victim of sexual abuse as a child to file civil claims against his or her perpetrator and the institutions that enabled the abuse despite the fact that their statute of limitations for such claims had expired. Defendants who have been sued under this statute of limitations revival portion of the Act contend that this important victims’ rights provision is unconstitutional under the North Carolina Constitution and are seeking to have victims’ claims dismissed. The Superior Court judge in these early cases transferred the cases to a special 3 Judge Panel to hear the appeal and rule on the constitutionality of the revival portion of the Safe Child Act.

On Thursday, October 21, 2021, Bobby Jenkins and Don Higley, attorneys with the Lanier Law Group argued before the special 3 Judge Panel in Raleigh on behalf of all victims of childhood sexual abuse who are bringing claims under the SAFE Child Act and asked the court to deny the defendant’s motion to dismiss these cases and to find that the General Assembly acted well within its authority in passing the Act and that the revival provision of the Act is clearly permissible under the North Carolina Constitution. They argued that there is no way the people of North Carolina in adopting their Constitution intended for it to protect child predators and their enablers.
Attorney Todd King Admitted to South Carolina Bar
Our own, Todd King, sat for the South Carolina Bar Exam and passed with flying colors (of course). This paves the way for Todd to begin practicing in South Carolina in addition to North Carolina. We are very proud of Todd and all his hard work and commitment.
Time is Running Out For Victims of Past Childhood Sexual Abuse
The North Carolina General Assembly passed the SAFE Child Act in 2019 and one of its key provisions allowed anyone who was a victim of sexual abuse as a child to file civil claims against his or her perpetrator and the institutions that enabled the abuse

This provision revives older claims despite the fact that their statute of limitations for had expired. This law provided victims with two years - from January 1, 2020 through December 31, 2021.

Time is running out for these victims. The deadline is fast approaching and is December 31, 2021. Spread the word. If you know someone who was sexually abused when they were under 18 years of age by a member of the clergy, teacher, doctor, etc. please urge them to take action before time runs out.

Cranberry Sauce Recipe
(super easy and delicious)
• 1 cup white sugar
• 1 cup orange juice
• 1 (12 ounce) package fresh cranberries

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, dissolve 1 cup of white sugar in 1 cup of orange juice.

Stir in 1 (12 ounce) package of fresh cranberries and cook until they start to pop (about 10 minutes).

Remove from heat, and transfer to a bowl. Cranberry sauce will thicken as it cools. Refrigeration will speed up the thickening.

Totally Tasteless Lawyer Joke
A man died and was taken to his place of eternal torment by the devil.

As he passed sulfurous pits and shrieking sinners, he saw a man he recognized as a lawyer making love to a beautiful woman.

"That's not fair," he complained. "I face torment for all eternity, and that lawyer gets to spend it making love to a beautiful woman."

"Shut up!" barked the devil, jabbing the man with his pitchfork. "Who are you to question HER punishment?"
