  • Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigations — Travel Data Collection - The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is conducting market research, seeking available sources to provide a subscription for a web based online portal that contains travel data that supports over 10,000 users from the agency across numerous locations. In other data news, on November 23rd, Mother Jones published an article entitled Piecing Together the Evidence: Open-Source Intelligence in Israel’s Gaza War. In this story, Henry Carnell interviews Eliot Higgins, the founder of Bellingcat, in a discussion about the significance of open-source intelligence (OSINT) in validating information related to Israel's conflict in Gaza. Bellingcat, known for its investigative prowess, delves into the role of OSINT in combatting misinformation, hate speech, and factual distortions surrounding the events in the region.

  • Once we have all that visual information, we do a process called geolocation, which confirms exactly where these images were taken. You can’t really trust an image from an incident unless you know exactly where it took place. Once you have that, you have a catalog of content of the incident. Then you put that into a timeline.”

Want better AI? Get input from a real (human) expert

Scientists at the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory have put forth a new way to evaluate an AI system’s recommendations. They bring human experts into the loop to view how the ML performed on a set of data.  The expert learns which types of data the machine-learning system typically classifies correctly, and which data types lead to confusion and system errors. Armed with this knowledge, the experts then offer their own confidence score on future system recommendations.
