MHS Student Wins Trip to Germany
Mahopac High School Sophomore Danica Parent is among a select group of students from across the United States who will have the opportunity to stay in Germany this summer thanks to their academic achievements.

“I scored in the top 10% of the country on the National German exam,” Parent said. “I answered essay questions in German, took tests, and had an interview with a native German speaker before I was selected.”

Of 12,300 applicants only 48 students were chosen for their outstanding academic achievements in German. In the summer, Parent will stay with a German host family in Kiel, Germany for four weeks. She will attend classes and get to see the country whose language she has studied for the past four years.

“One of the best parts about learning German at Mahopac has been the fact that I’ve had the same class and the same teacher ever since I started taking German in 7th grade,” Parent said. “My classmates are great, we learn really well together and Frau Bauerlein has helped me love to study the language.”

Parent isn’t just interested in being a tourist in Germany, either. To her, the exciting part about the trip is the opportunity to become immersed in day-to-day life in Germany.

“It’s going to be so cool to live like an actual German with a host family, attend classes, and just be a German for a little while.”

Former NYSP Investigator Speaks to Students About Safety Online
"When you post a picture, you have to be very aware of what's in the background, because that can be used to locate you," former State Police Investigator Tom Roidl explained to Lakeview's fourth and fifth grade students. Roidl, who has presented to audiences of all ages about social media and internet safety, will be presenting in the MCSD through next week. Roidl told stories of his time in the New York State Police and explained to students how to remain safe online.

"The best piece of advice I can give is this:" Roidl said. "Make sure that any action you take online is one that your future self will thank you for."

Tom Roidl spoke to parents on April 12 and will continue to speak before students in grades 4-12 through next week.
Biomimicry Workshop Comes to Fulmar Road
The PNW BOCES Center for Environmental Education Biomimicry workshop made its way to Fulmar Road Elementary this week. Educator Victor Messick stopped in to Carol Stefunek's first grade class to show students all the ways that animals teach and inspire us. Students were invited to come up with their own animals and how they might inspire new inventions. One student came up with a scarf, inspired by a unicorn, while another thought up a flying water bottle based on a ladybug.
Holocaust Survivor Speaks to MHS Students
Annie Kleinhaus was only a child when she and members of her family fled from Nazis and their dogs in the forests of France during the Second World War. She said that the fear didn't truly set in until she saw the terror on her mother's face.

As time passes, there are fewer Holocaust survivors who can speak first-hand about their experiences. That is why Kleinhaus now speaks before students like she did at Mahopac High School.

Kleinhaus' story was one of grim survival, but she concluded with an encouraging lesson for the next generation. She told students not to allow themselves to be destroyed by adversity. "I am a survivor," Kleinhaus said, "not a victim."
