NEW Damon Runyon Clinical Investigator Award
The Damon Runyon Clinical Investigator Award supports the most promising early career physician-scientists willing to devote their efforts to the development and application of new diagnostic approaches and therapeutic strategies for cancer and cancer prevention through clinical investigation. Preference is given to those whose research adheres to the “Handshake Rule,” meaning that the physician will conduct research studies that directly involve patients (this rule does not apply to pathologist candidates). The award will provide $600,000 over three years in financial support for the investigator’s scientific needs. In addition, the foundation will retire up to $100,000 of medical school debt owed by the awardee. Five nominations will be accepted for review from Georgetown Lombardi, GUMC and Georgetown University School of Medicine. Finalists will be invited to be interviewed by the selection committee. Only one application will be accepted from a mentor (including co-mentorships) or investigator per review session. View detailed award information, eligibility criteria, application guidelines and forms. Application deadline: Wednesday, February 1.

GI Program Funds Award
A newly established Ruesch Center / GI Working Group grant mechanism is currently soliciting research proposals for consideration. Funding will be available to Georgetown Lombardi and MedStar Health scientists and clinicians with a GI cancer-relevant research focus — basic, clinical, population and translational. This set of pilot grants is intended to foster translational collaborations and generate new hypotheses and results to prove them, leading to jointly authored publications. Between two and five one-year collaborative project awards are available, ranging from $25,000 to 50,000 each, with at least two investigators each. View more information and application procedure details. Submit a letter of intent to marshalj@georgetown.edu. LOI Deadline: Friday, January 13, 2023, 5 p.m.

Breast Cancer Research Foundation Precision Prevention Initiative
The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) is requesting applications to its Precision Prevention Initiative. Applications should address the challenges and gaps in primary breast cancer prevention with a focus in one or more of the following categories: risk assessment/stratification, biomarkers, and interventions. Applicants are encouraged to engage collaborators from diverse disciplines and utilize, where possible, areas of expertise and/or methodologies not normally associated with prevention or cancer research. Projects range from single investigator innovation awards to collaborative pre-clinical, translational, clinical and intervention studies. In all cases, projects that impact underserved, minority or high-risk populations are encouraged. Funding levels range from $250,000/year for two years up to $750,000/year for three years. Download the RFA to view program and application details. Letters of intent deadline: January 16, 2023, via ProposalCentral. Invitation to submit full proposals issued by March 3, 2023.
