A Message from our VP of Academics and Ed Tech

To the Carondelet Community,

It has been a difficult week. We are holding Pope Francis in our thoughts and prayers for his return to health; we are mourning the senseless loss of life in the recent Nashville shooting. It is one of the many moments in this complicated world in which it is a great solace to be part of a faith-based community where we can find comfort and support in our community of care as we navigate through these dark moments together. So on this Palm Sunday, when we start our most sobering and sacred week, let us remember the significance of welcoming Jesus into our hearts and our commitment to following him. This will be reinforced this week as we hold a Holy Week liturgy with a veneration of the Cross on Tuesday before the break.

With all this, realizing we are just a few days away from a well-deserved break, I can’t believe that this year is winding down. Between now and the finish line, we are looking at an extremely busy time that is a bustle of activity. A quick look at the academics events coming up we can see that:

  • Progress reports are coming out on April 4 just before spring break
  • MAP testing for freshmen and sophomores is scheduled for right after Easter break (April 20 & 21 for math and April 25 & 28 for language arts)
  • On May 1 AP testing starts and runs for just over two weeks
  • On May 8 registration for summer online classes through the College of the Siskiyous (more on that below)

We can not forget the plethora of end-of-year events, awards ceremonies, and the bittersweet events connected to celebrating our seniors: baccalaureate mass and the graduation ceremony at the Concord Pavilion. There’s a lot left to look forward to, but for now, we hope that students and families spend time together and experience a rejuvenating rest.

In faith,

Dr C.

Elizabeth Chaponot, Ph.D.

VP for Academics and Ed Tech

Reminders + Requests

Student Safety Reminders

We would like to remind all students who are walking to campus from Shadelands Business Park and/or the Countrywood Shopping Center to stay alert, exercise caution, and walk with a group. There have been a couple of incidents of people outside of our community loitering near Winton Drive. To address this, we have notified Concord PD and have added a morning patrol down Winton Drive for our campus security guard. If you or your student have any concerns about safety around our campus, please connect with Michael Viola, Director of Facilities & Grounds, or Caitlin Main, Dean of Students.

College Credit Opportunities over the Summer

Carondelet has a partnership with the College of the Siskiyous to help students take college classes that can transfer to their college after high school and help them get ahead on the General Education requirements. It is also a wonderful way for our students to showcase college readiness when they apply for college.

Registration for College of the Siskiyous summer courses will start on May 8. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to take college-level coursework for almost free (cost of materials). We have added many more course options available for students this year. Here is a link to our FAQ sheet about the program for your review. The new catalog with summer offerings has not yet been released but we should get that sometime after spring break. Please contact Sonia Wilson, Front Office Manager, if you have questions.

Battle of the Boldest

JUNIORS! Battle of the boldest is just WEEKS AWAY and we need your help to make this year's battle our best! Please submit videos and photos of you and your friends ASAP (class of 2024 only). Please reach out to Caroline Cabral or Junior Council if you want more information. The Council meets Tuesday/Thursday during 0 in Studio 2 if you want to stop by.

Senior Ball Registration will close Tuesday, April 25. All information will be available here, including the link to registration, guest passes, FAQs, and bus registration. This year's Senior Ball: “Starry Night” will take place on April 29 from 7:00 - 10:00 PM at The Overlook at Port Workspaces in Oakland. Tickets are $150 per person. All tickets must be purchased in advance. The price of the ticket includes dancing, games, drinks, food, and dessert.

Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention Parent Ed Night

giphy image

Recording Is Now Available!

On March 14, Debbie Berndt, director of Parent Movement 2.0 and Substance Free Athletics spoke at our Parent Education webinar entitled, “21st Century Understanding of Marijuana, Fentanyl, and Prevention for Parents.” The recording of this webinar is now available on our Carondelet YouTube page. You can view this video here.

Other programming focusing on drug and alcohol abuse prevention occurred throughout this month. Biology classes had a lesson on addiction and opioids with a special focus on the action of Fentanyl on the brain. Anatomy and Physiology classes also learned about drugs and their effect on the brain. In the Cannon Wellness Center, a group of students attended a workshop on the dangers of Fentanyl with Bay Area Community Resources. Next year, Carondelet and De La Salle are planning assemblies in March to continue this topic. This week Carondelet and De La Salle students were able to complete an anonymous survey where they shared the topics that they feel teens need to know in regard to drug and alcohol use. All of these efforts are an important part of Carondelet’s overall focus on student health and wellness.
