Weekly News Update | November 13, 2022

Stewardship Season

As baptized people we are committed to Christ, and we demonstrate part of our commitment by giving authority and respect to his teachings. One that we sometimes overlook is this: “The Lord loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Cor. 9: 7)

One of the sad things I have noticed in my forty-seven years of ordained ministry is that one of the quickest ways to turn people off is to mention the topic of money. This is always a tender topic. Perhaps that is because people see themselves as the owners of their financial resources. And most of us don’t like to be told what to do with your possessions. But I suspect there is something more at work here. Money represents power, and to give it away means losing part of our ability to shape things according to our own will.

So, one reason the Lord loves a cheerful giver is because it means the giver is presenting part of himself or herself to God. It represents an act of trust and worship to the One from who all blessings flow. In making a pledge to the cathedral for 2023 you are stating that you want your power to merge with God’s power in order for the will of God to be among us and in the world. I will be blunt. That stands as an immensely important act of praise to our Maker and Redeemer.

Please pray for the will to be a cheerful giver.

What's wrong with our sound system at church?

Part of the problem we are hearing in church and on the livestream is a "noise gate" opening and closing.  A noise gate is used to mask the hiss that derives from having microphones gained up and ready to capture quiet inputs. This was sadly not configured appropriately before the system went live and we are working to correct the problem with our original vendor and/or find another qualified team to calibrate this and other issues we are experiencing. We are working towards a solution as soon as possible, understanding that it has been bothersome for many these past several weeks. Thank you for your patience, please continue to look here for weekly updates about our progress.

Christian Education with Dr. Christopher Gravis

This Sunday, November 13 after the 10 am service

Many people are attracted to the Episcopal Church for its beautiful musical traditions. For the next two weeks we’ll explore The Hymnal 1982 and many of the diverse musical expressions it contains — from unaccompanied plainchant, to Tudor modality, German chorales from the Protestant Reformation, tunes from the Genevan Psalter, contributions from the great hymn writers Watts & Wesley, and the influence of English Folk melodies, our current hymnal draws from many different historical sources. We’ll look at how the hymnal serves the Book of Common Prayer, and we’ll do it all by singing around the piano! Join Dr. Gravis for the next two Sundays during Adult Christian Education, as we explore the Hymnal 1982. And you won’t want to miss Adult Christian Education, when Dr. Zach Neufeld will offer a complete demonstration of our historic 1924 Skinner piper organ. All are welcome.
