Chesterfield Celebrates Black History Month during February

Virginia State University and Chesterfield County proudly presents the 33rd Black History Month (BHM) Celebration. Each February, the celebration includes a variety of programs designed to explore the rich, diverse heritage of African Americans and their contributions to our community and nation. Many programs are free, and hosted at county recreation centers and libraries.
The 2022 BHM national theme is Black Health and Wellness. Check out the schedule of activities.
February is National Therapeutic Recreation Month

County residents with disabilities can participate in recreation opportunities thanks to the therapeutic recreation staff at Chesterfield County Parks and Recreation Department. This February explore all the activities and services offered in celebration of Therapeutic Recreation Month.
As part of the celebration, residents can stop by one of the recreation centers Feb. 7-10 to pick up an activity bag and information on therapeutic recreation programs.
Department Named Sportable Community Partner of the Year
In December, Sportable announced their Sportable Heroes Awards. Chesterfield Parks and Recreation was named as the Community Partner of the Year. Our department staff enthusiastically introduced kayaking and archery to people of all abilities and ages. In addition, we provided accessible facilities for 11 Sportable programs.
Sportable commented, the department's "commitment to our mission and the deep passion its employees have for supporting our work earned the County this year's Community Partner Award."
Sportable is the only adaptive sports club in Central Virginia. They serve over 400 athletes each year in competitive and recreational adaptive sports programs.
Basketball Keeps Youth Active During Winter
About 5,000 youths gather each week to play basketball in four leagues:
From November through March, teams play in every county school up to seven days per week.
Adverse Weather Can Cause Cancellations

When adverse weather occurs, parks and recreation activities and facilities can be affected. Stay up-to-date on closings and cancellations on our website, and social media: Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Jobs. Jobs. Jobs.

The Parks and Recreation Department recruits and hires year-round. Positions include full time and part-time staff for recreation centers, summer camps, facility supervision, and parks maintenance. We encourage those with an interest in parks and recreation to apply.
Currently, we are searching for seasonal parks maintenance staff who work up to 40 hours per week from March to October. This is a great opportunity to work outside, develop skills - like carpentry or small construction, and enhance the park system.
Watch for upcoming listings for summer camp staff and other opportunities or contact us.
