A MESSAGE FROM SR. PRINCIPAL, MR. TOLZDA

Dear St. Serra Parents,

LOVE is the seventh of our eight St. Serra core values, and the one that we will focus on during the month of April. Love is a complicated topic to write about or even define; it can mean many different things to different people, depending on who you ask. I am no expert myself, but I can relate to the most common types of love that exist in families; love for your spouse, love for your children and grandchildren, and love for our Lord.

Throughout the years as a school administrator, I have had numerous situations in which I had to issue consequences to a child who had broken school rules. During those conversations, many students would often share that their biggest concern was about their parents finding out. They would say, “my parents are going to kill me!” or, “I am going to be in so much trouble.” I always responded to them by saying, "your parents may be angry or disappointed in your behavior, choices, or actions, but they will always love you.” I always want students to know that their parents have unconditional love for them; that they will always love their children no matter what.

Often in these situations, parents struggle with letting their child fail and endure the consequences. It's a parental instinct to want to “rescue” their child by trying to get the disciplinary actions reduced or dropped altogether. By doing this, parents don’t realize that they aren't actually supporting or advocating for their child, but inadvertently enabling them. Supporting your child is showing them unconditional love, no matter what the situation. Enabling your child is protecting them from difficult circumstances, which usually reinforces ongoing undesirable behavior. Many times these situations are an opportunity for a “life lesson” to be taught. Believe me, I understand that it’s difficult to see your child hurt, it hurts us even more as parents. Witnessing your child fail or having to endure consequences causes feelings of helplessness, anger, and sadness. It’s also natural to worry about your child’s future and how it could be impacted by a disciplinary incident, which is why it’s important how parents respond in these learning-moment situations.

“There is no fear in LOVE, but perfect love casts out fear”

1 John 4:18

We know how important LOVE is to Jesus as there are many examples throughout the bible. Whenever there are opportunities to show our unconditional love to our children, it is important to support them and not enable them, so that they have a chance to learn from their mistakes.

Always striving,

Tim Tolzda

Sr. Principal
