Democracy Reform in California: Voting Rights, Recall, and the Electoral College
Voting rights are important to all Americans. This webinar is a collaboration with UC San Diego, the San Diego Chapter of the Fulbright Association, and the San Diego League of Women Voters and focuses on current voting issues in California.
Panelists include:
-
Thad Kousser - Department Chair and Professor, Political Science, UC San Diego
-
Jonathan Mehta Stein - Executive Director, California Common Cause
-
Jeanne Weidner - Chair of Speakers Bureau, San Diego League of Women Voters
- Alesandra (Ali) Lozano (Moderator) - Voting Rights and Redistricting Manager, California Common Cause
Challenges to our democracy during the past year in the forms of mis- and dis-information, gerrymandering, and voter suppression will be covered along with a discussion on the progress California has made to build a more accessible democracy, including details on landmark laws that make access to voter registration and voting easier, and data showing whether or not those reforms have really made a difference.
Additionally, drawing on data from the UC San Diego Yankelovich Center Survey on Recall Reform, we will discuss what voters thought about the
recall process this year and what the prospects are for reform over the next year.

Chancellor's Associates Virtual Colloquium
Distinguished Professor Ethan Bier pioneered the development of a breakthrough gene drive technology called active genetics, revolutionizing the way scientists engineer the transfer of specific genetic traits from one generation to another. The technology is a driving force behind the Tata Institute for Genetics and Society (TIGS), established to focus on immunizing mosquitoes against malaria disease transmission. Join us for an eye-opening presentation to understand the various ways in which active genetic elements can be used to control the transmission of pathogens, treat the effects of debilitating diseases, restore natural ecosystems, reverse antibiotic resistance in bacteria, and much more.

Comcast will be staring off this school year by expanding eligibility for the Internet Essentials program to all Federal Pell Grant recipients across its service area. This expansion will allow nearly one million additional low-income students to benefit from Internet Essentials, Comcast's signature broadband adoption and digital equity initiative.
Starting August 23, 2021, students receiving a Federal Pell Grant, can use their Financial Aid Award Letter as proof of eligibility for Internet Essentials. Expanding Internet Essentials eligibility to include Federal Pell Grant recipients brings eligibility more fully in-line with the federal government's Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB) eligibility, but is a permanent, structural change to the eligibility for the program.
So, students can rest assured that they will be able to either have Internet service for free under EBB or for a heavily discounted price of just $9.95/month.

UC San Diego - Return to Learn
|
The Return to Learn Program is a voluntary student program that screens for active SARS-CoV-2 virus, the virus that causes COVID-19 disease. If you choose to participate, you will be helping potentially reduce the risks of COVID-19 outbreaks and making our UC San Diego community a healthier place.
In this initial phase, in May 2020, SARS-CoV-2 testing was be made available to resident undergraduate and graduate students currently residing on campus. Participation is voluntary, but all eligible students are encouraged to participate, and there will be no cost to the students who choose to participate.
The Return to Learn Program is for asymptomatic student volunteers only. If you are having COVID-19 symptoms (shortness of breath, cough, fever, chills, loss of smell or taste), please call Student Health Services at 858-534-3300.
At this time UC San Diego is not able to accommodate students who do not reside in on-campus housing, nor families of students who may also live on campus. They hope to expand testing in the future so that we can accommodate many more groups.
