Dear Normandale Families,

As COVID restrictions ease, it is easy to forget what the return to in-person learning was like for students this fall. Masks, quarantines and a year and a half of different learning models pushed Normandale staff to reinforce routines, rebuild community and re-connect students with French.

One of the tools we have used to do this are CLT’s, or community learning time. CLT’s are a collaborative effort between Normandale administrators, Kids Club/Wise Guys staff and Normandale’s Student Leadership Team.

Each week individual grade-levels gather in the auditorium for 10-15 minutes as we: address topics from our new Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum, touch on building specific concerns, share information about cultural/historical events and address common errors in French. Some of the topics covered to date include: School-wide norms, hallway and cafeteria norms, bullying prevention, arrival and dismissal routines, kindness, Martin Luther King Jr., Presidents’ Day, Black History Month, and French fossilized errors. Upcoming themes for March are Francophonie and Women’s History Month. At the end of CLT, students head out to the playground or large field for a 20 minute recess. While a grade-level is at CLT, their classroom teachers use the time to plan lessons and collaborate as a team.

PARENT INPUT FORM

Each spring, teachers and support staff meet and confer to develop class lists for the coming year, striving to create classes where optimum learning for all students can take place. It is our goal to have balanced classes across each grade level. We consider many factors as we try to stabilize our classes and accommodate individual needs such as gender balance, emotional/social combinations, balance of performance levels, special learning needs, teaching/learning styles, and behavioral factors.

Although teacher requests are not considered, if you have specific information about your child that should be taken into consideration, please complete the Parent Input Form. Note that this form is optional. Parent Input Forms are due Friday, April 1st.

Information that comes in after the deadline will be more difficult to consider since the placement process will have already started. Hard copies of this form are also available in the office.

PLANNED ABSENCES

For upcoming planned absences (travel, non-school events, personal matters), please fill out the Planned Absence Form at least 5 days in advance of the absence to be counted as excused. Illness, medical, religious, and funeral absences do not require the Planned Absence Form.

You can also report their absence online via Infinite Campus Please note, as with the form, the absence must be reported at least 5 days in advance to be excused.

LOST AND FOUND - SPECIAL ITEMS

Lost and found glasses are kept at the Normandale front desk. Please let the office know if any of these belong to your student!

2022 DISTRICT-WIDE FOOD DRIVE

VEAP logo.png

Edina Public Schools is partnering with VEAP, the Twin Cities largest food pantry, to raise food and funds for local families in need. Please join us April 4 – 8, 2022 as we work to fully stock VEAP’s pantry! With the help of area businesses, organizations, and other school districts, VEAP is aiming high to raise a total of 100,000 pounds of food during this critical spring drive. Watch for more information after Spring Break. Thank you for you and your student’s help!

LUNCHTIME VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We need 2 volunteers on Fridays to help serve hot lunch. Volunteers will need to be masked (please bring your own) and wear a hairnet (provided at school). You may have to do some light lifting (i.e. moving pans of food to the serving area).

Please sign up HERE if you are able to help!

We need volunteers EVERY DAY to supervise home lunch in the Normandale Auditorium. Please sign up HERE if you are able to help. Volunteers are what allows us to offer a separate space for home lunch students.
