Identity and Belonging Through Israeli Arts & Culture
A lecture series with Vavi Toran

Join Vavi and explore the complex concepts of identity and the sense of belonging. What shapes these concepts for us and for the diverse population of Israel? How can these concepts live side by side and why do they sometimes clash with each other?  Each session will be 1 hour plus Q&A. All sessions use the same link.

Session Three: The Language of Identity
Thursday, October 21 at 7:00 pm
Poets who write in Yiddish, Hebrew, and Arabic explore the boundaries of their mother tongues. How does the language they heard at home affect the perception of their identity and how society at large views them? We will discuss how language can be both a connector and a divider.

Session Four: Homeland Songs (Shirey Moledet) as Identity Builders
Thursday, November 4 at 7:00 pm
Shirey Moledet is the most typical musical genre of Israel’s early years. We will embark on a journey of songs and glean through them the connection and relationship with the homeland, events that shaped morale and national mood, and changes in attitude.

Get Out the Vote for Virginia this week!
There are only two weeks remaining in this election, and voter turnout is in need of a boost, especially in communities of color, the focus of the nonpartisan Center for Common Ground phone banks. This will be a phone bank marathon 7am-3pm Pacific Time, and you can join any time! There will be no training at the event (although we will be happy to answer questions), so please watch the PDI Training video first.
You can also start making calls on your own before 5pm Pacific Time.

Zoom With and About Immigrants
Tuesday, November 2 at 7:00 pm
Our immigrant neighbors are reeling from the threat of deportation and, more than ever, the struggle to afford to stay in their San Francisco homes. Join us to hear their stories of struggle, their empowerment through Faith in Action, and their ideas for improving the lives of all San Franciscans. Sign up here to join the Zoom on November 2 at 7:00 pm.

Stop Medicare Privatization
Even while a group of Or Shalomers is working for affordable access to health care for all, activists are having to fight a rear-guard action against an attempt to privatize Medicare. This would be a huge step in the wrong direction! Physicians for a National Health Plan (PNHP), for decades a leading voice for universal health care, asks us to sign their petition to HHS Secretary Xavier Bercera (a Californian). The petition asks to end the Direct Contracting Entities program, started under the Trump administration and continuing under President Biden, which will essentially privatize Medicare. For more information, contact Margo Friestadt.
Visioning Our World Anew
Wednesday, November 3 at 4pm Pacific
The confluence of a global pandemic, social upheaval, and increasingly devastating weather-related disasters have heightened urgent questions about society, community and the fate of our planet. Join us for an in-depth conversation with Heather McGheeRabbi Benay Lappe, and Dr. Laurie Zoloth. Drawing from their respective expertise in the fields of social and economic policy, Jewish history and rabbinics, and ethics and theology, our speakers will discuss how we can use the crises of the past two years as an opportunity to reimagine and rebuild our world in a new image.
