Mayor's Message:

A New Chance to Show Love

Mayor MappIG.jpg

Greetings,

As we wait for the clock to strike midnight on New Year's Eve, countless traditions will take place in homes across our city. Some of us will eat specific foods, count twelve grapes, choose a particular color sock, sit under a table, or even run around the block with a suitcase - all in the hopes that the new year will bring us exactly what we are looking for: money, travel, health, luck, or love. And, of course, who can forget our list of new year's resolutions.

Some of our resolutions will be the same as last year, while others may have us looking forward to trying something different for the first time or building on the lessons that we've learned this past year. We practice cultural traditions and make lists of resolutions because we know that this new beginning brings a new chance.

The new year can bring a fresh opportunity to earn more money, to have an experience in a new country, to meet the unfound love of your life, or to create new friendships. But it's also another chance to be someone better. A new chance to be kinder, more compassionate, and a better friend and neighbor. A new chance to show love to our community.

None of us are the same people we were at the start of this year. We have survived the darkest parts of the pandemic and the loss that came with it. This was a year for healing. We have learned how to be a community again. Friends and family members finally stood beside one another at events and celebrations - unafraid but still cautious. We learned that there is nothing like the in-person human connection and the importance of cherishing every opportunity to be together while also remembering what the coronavirus brutally uncovered - some of us are struggling.

The pandemic highlighted the needs that exist in our community, and many of us answered the call by volunteering our time, donating what we could, and supporting each other. However, just because the pandemic is not as much of a priority in our news does not mean that the struggles it uncovered don't exist anymore. Let's take everything we learned this year and be better in the next. Let's not focus entirely on what we have but on who we can be. Let's be better neighbors and continue to #Love Plainfield.

Friends and neighbors, I wish you all a healthy, happy, and purpose-filled New Year. I hope you receive everything you need and become who you aspire to be.

Mensaje Del Alcalde:

Una Nueva Oportunidad Para Mostrar Amor

Saludos,

#LovePlainfield #AmoPlainfield.

A MESSAGE FROM UNION COUNTY:

Put Plastic Film and Styrofoam on your Holiday Recycling List this Year

The Union County Board of County Commissioners reminds residents that much of the material in their holiday gift deliveries can be recycled. Municipal drop-off locations are now available for Styrofoam recycling, plastic film recycling, or both.

As a reminder, the Styrofoam and plastic film programs are drop-off only, and they are only available at designated municipal recycling sites.

“We encourage everyone to add block-type Styrofoam and plastic film to their list of household recyclables this year, and bring these items to a designated location.” said Union County Commissioner Chair Rebecca L. Williams.

Styrofoam recycling is available in nine municipalities in Union County. Visit ucnj.org/recycling/styrofoam for a list of drop-off locations and hours of operations.

A MESSAGE FROM THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY:

Governor Murphy Signs Gun Safety Bill Strengthening Concealed Carry Laws in New Jersey in Response to Bruen Decision

Today’s Bill Signing Delivers on Governor’s Promise & Continues the Murphy Administration's Record of Leading the Nation on Gun Safety

SCOTCH PLAINS – Governor Phil Murphy today signed A4769/S3214, delivering on the promise he made in the immediate aftermath of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Bruen decision when he unveiled a comprehensive legislative proposal to maintain New Jersey’s status as a model for gun safety by strengthening restrictions for who is eligible for a public carry permit, and establishing a list of places where people with carry permits cannot bring their firearms.

In June, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the N.Y. State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen case that it is impermissible to require applicants in New York to show “proper cause” to carry a handgun in public, which had the effect of invalidating New Jersey's longstanding laws restricting public carry to those who could demonstrate a "justifiable need". Less than 24 hours later, Governor Murphy unveiled a comprehensive proposal that, consistent with Bruen, would strengthen the statutory disqualifiers for those eligible for a carry permit, while significantly expanding the list of sensitive places where individuals cannot carry firearms.

“Today’s bill signing is the culmination of months of negotiations between this Administration and our partners in the Legislature, delivering on the promise I made this summer to keep New Jersey safe in the aftermath of the Supreme Court's awful decision,” said Governor Murphy. “While I strongly disagree with that decision, we must abide by it, and today's law fully respects the Second Amendment while keeping guns out of the wrong hands and preventing them from proliferating in our communities. I am proud to sign this commonsense legislation which prohibits carrying guns in sensitive places, including our daycares, hospitals, libraries, and stadiums.”

A MESSAGE FROM THE WHITE HOUSE:

President Biden Delivers Electric Mail Trucks, Clean Air, and Lower Costs

WHITE HOUSE LOGO.png

This week, President Biden delivered four major wins to advance our nation’s climate, environmental justice, and conservation goals while lowering energy costs for Americans.

Using funding from the Inflation Reduction Act, the U.S. Postal Service announced an historic $9.6 billion investment to put 66,000 electric delivery trucks on the roads over the next five years and acquire only electric Next Generation Delivery Vehicles starting in 2026.

In another win for clean air, the Environmental Protection Agency finalized the strongest-ever standards to cut smog- and soot-forming emissions from heavy-duty trucks. EPA estimates that the new standards will result in 18,000 fewer cases of childhood asthma and 1.1 fewer lost school days by 2045.

The Department of Energy also proposed stronger efficiency standards for light bulbs to conserve energy and cut energy bills. With this announcement, the Administration has now taken more than 110 actions this year to strengthen energy efficiency standards and save the average family at least $100 annually.

The Administration also secured a major international win for conservation and biodiversity, with countries across the globe reaching a historic agreement to collectively commit to conserving at least 30 percent of lands and waters by 2030, a goal that President Biden committed the U.S. to during his first days in office.
