"Neuroimaging with High-Performance Gradient Systems"

Thomas Foo, Ph.D.

Chief Scientist in the Biology and Applied Physics technology group at GE Research

Thomas Foo is Chief Scientist in the Biology and Applied Physics technology group at GE Research. He has been with GE since 1989 when he joined the Applied Science Laboratory at GE Healthcare. In 2005, he led the MRI Systems Laboratory at GE Research, and later transitioned to the role of a Chief Scientist in 2010. He received his A.B. in Physics and Mathematics from Kenyon College (Gambier, OH) in 1984, and his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Medical Physics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1990. His areas of research include fast imaging, cardiac and vascular imaging, high performance MRI systems development, and image-guided therapy. At GE Healthcare, he led the development of cardiac MRI as well as expanding applications in vascular MRI. At GE Research he leads efforts developing novel high-performance, dedicated neuroimaging MRI systems, including highly efficient head gradient coils that exceed the performance of any existing clinical MRI scanner. He is the principal investigator or co-principal investigator on several active grants, among which is an NIH BRAIN initiative award to build a novel, lightweight, low-cryogen 7T MRI brain scanner, and a Department of Defense grant that developed the high-performance MAGNUS brain imaging gradient system and is now used for assessing mild traumatic brain injury in a military population at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. He currently holds 99 issued U.S. patents and has authored or co-authored over 120 book-chapters and peer-reviewed journal papers. He is recipient of the GE Edison Award, a GE Coolidge Fellow, a Fellow of the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM), and a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE).
