“the percussion forms a beguiling buzz, and the yearning in her voice carries the song as it explores its own contours” – Billboard

“If you’re someone who’s looking for a complete icon to root for, look no further than our friend Yumi Nu” – Lyrical Lemonade

Today, alt-R&B dream Yumi Nu releases her debut EP Hajime. Coming in at a concise yet fully formed six tracks, the EP is a flawless representation of the era of self-actualization Yumi has reached through years of deconstructing the confines of race, body image, religion, and every nuanced topic in between. This personal growth has led her to a place of confidence in her fluid view of artistry. Listen to Hajime HERE.

Possessing a rare hypnotic quality in both her sound and aesthetics, Yumi Nu creates a heavenly world that can only exist through the destruction of former limitations. The release of Hajime was intentionally aligned with Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Core to who Yumi Nu is, much of her personal journey is defined by the ever-changing relationship she has with her cultural identity. These themes can be heard throughout Hajime.

On her debut, Yumi said, “Hajime in Japanese means ‘the beginning.’ I thought it was a fitting word to title my EP that because it’s my debut project as Yumi Nu. I’ve grown so much as a songwriter and artist since the beginning and this project simultaneously feels like the start for me, while also an accumulation of everything I’ve learned and who I’ve become.”

Along with today’s release comes an animated visualizer for “Sin” created by Droophead. The video shows Yumi as a Mother Nature-like figure, becoming one with Earth. The tranquil setting of this animated world brings viewers even deeper into the lush universe of Hajime.

Outside of music, Yumi Nu is an internationally acclaimed, barrier breaking model. Some of her accolades include being the first plus-size Asian-American cover star of Sports Illustrated’s infamous Swimsuit Issue, as well as covers of both Vogue US and Japan. Yumi and her sister Natalie are both the May cover stars for Teen Vogue as well.

On the music side, her recent releases have garnered support from notable Spotify playlists such as New Music Friday, Fresh Finds RnB and Jasmine and Apple playlists like New Music Daily and New in R&B. Early champions of the singles from Hajime include the likes of Billboard and PAPER. Yumi Nu is a boundary breaking force in whatever she sets her mind to.

ABOUT YUMI NU

Yumi Nu is a New York based, Japanese-American recording artist and plus size model. Since childhood, Yumi has been inspired by her entertainment driven family and started singing lessons at age 12 and writing songs by age 15. After a couple years as a pop artist on Dim Mak records, she took a brief hiatus from the music industry to refine her craft. This led to her return to releasing music in 2022 with a set of new music and a new creative direction that pulls from alt-R&B and indie influences. Her debut EP Hajime, meaning "Beginning" in Japanese, is apt for Yumi's new take on her music and self-expression. Hajime is available now on all streaming platforms.
