Gary's Corner...
Kayak fishing is exploding across the country. I keep getting asked to build a series of rods for Yak fishermen. I’ve really dug into this topic and when I’m asking questions about what’s needed in a Yak rod, it almost always comes back to the same answer. A Yak series should be like the Fury rods or Champion rods, strong with options in lengths. The only thing that keeps coming up is if the rod could float. This is something to think about, but otherwise I honestly don’t see the benefit of making another series that’s going to do the same thing as the current rods we have. It’s just more SKUs to manage. I do appreciate all the feedback from anglers. I also believe that we’ll see kayak fishing getting stronger still with the price of gasoline going out of sight. These big 250HP engines we all love are really thirsty when it comes to fuel.

We have the new Maverick series of rods in stock now. We’re missing a couple of 6’9” models but we have the rest. The price point is $99.99. These are all graphite rods and they feel and balance really well. These are trimmed out with bright blue accents with a really clean look to them. The Maverick reels are still a way out. Shipping these days takes forever.

The spawn here in Texas started the end of February and really got rolling as March started. The cold fronts knock them back for sure, but Texas weather never stays the same long.

There’s been a lot of huge bass caught here lately. Lake Fork has kicked out some giants but it’s O.H. Ivie once again that’s dominating the huge bass scene. There’s a new lake record largemouth at 17.06lbs caught by Brodey Davis on a Dobyns Champion XP Series DC 795SB. The fish was caught on an A-Rig. Congrats to Brodey. This was his first double digit bass. He went to Ivie looking to catch his first “10 pounder”. He certainly did that.

Another record got smashed at Ivie as well.  It was a “mean mouth” which is a hybrid cross from a largemouth and a smallmouth. It weighed 11.07lbs and stands to smash the existing IGFA world record for the species, which is a 7.6lbs that was caught in 2021—also at O.H. Ivie. This fish was caught by Brady Stanford.

Our buddy, Josh Jones, added another Share-A-Lunker that weighed 14.79lbs and, once again, it was at O.H. Ivie. He caught this monster on a Fury Series FR 795SB. He was throwing a heavier rig and needed a bit more rod than his favorite Champion XP Series DC 794SB.

Ivie has an unbelievable amount of forage and these fish just keep getting bigger. I believe a new Texas State record will come out of Ivie this year or next year. The thing that’s crazy is Lake Fork has always been the giant bass lake for the state of Texas and Ivie is crushing it the last couple of years.

It's March and for most of the country this is big bass fishing time, I hope everyone gets out for a few days and you just might catch the fish of a lifetime.

Dobyns Pro's Harmon & Markham Win FPT Classic Title

“Karma” has got to be the best word to describe the outcome for the winners of the 20th annual Future Pro Tour Classic Championship held last weekend on Lake Berryessa, as for over 19 long years, the winners, Mike Harmon, and Jim Markham have navigated through both the good and bad times, always mindful that they would have to “put in the work”, if they ever hoped to win a Future Pro Tour Classic crown.

And last Sunday, a big dose of that “Karma” finally showed up at their doorstep.

But it was last week, just three days before the event, that the annual Angler’s Press Outdoors “Handicappers” sheet came out naming this team to its “Top 7” Picks for winning the event, based on their long history, and the fact that they were way overdue for a win.

And to this end, the APO “Handicappers” sheet gave them the moniker of team “Ambush”, because if they were to win - no one would see it coming.

And WIN they did, and as the proof of their “hiding in the weeds", and “never give up” attitude, Mike commented that they only had 4 fish going into the last and final minute of the event, and on his very last cast of the day - using a Yamamoto Senko, on a Dobyns - DX 703 SF series rod, he landed a 3-pound small-mouth that helped sealed their victory.

Boseman Wins NTXKC Event On Lake Fork
Our very own Sulphur Springs Warehouse Manager Brice Boseman took the top spot on Lake Fork with the North Texas Kayak Championship out of 116 other Kayak anglers. Brice braved the freezing temps and caught all his fish on the Fury Series FR 705CB.

Digino Gets A Top 10 Finish At Lake Of The Ozarks
Congratulations to Dobyns Rods' Pro Staffer Chris Digino for taking 10th Place at the MLF Toyota Series on Lake of the Ozarks.

Fresh off a Top 10 at the Toyota Series Championship on Pickwick Lake this past fall, Chris Digino is keeping the pace going. The lone Texas pro atop the leaderboard, Digino kept it basic, yet different, by slow-rolling a YUM YUMbrella Rig with Tackle HD Swimmer Swimbaits and VMC Boxer jigs. He used a 6.2:1 Lew’s BB1 Pro Speed Spool teamed with a Dobyns Rods Champion Extreme HP Series DX 746C to put ‘em in the boat.

Congratulations Chris!
Rhoden & Greene Take 3rd At Pyramid

March Already?
By Pete Robbins with Half Past First Cast

I returned Monday from the Bassmaster Classic at Lake Hartwell. It’s become a part of my yearly routine, and I calculate that I’ve now used up 17 weeks of vacation covering Classics for B.A.S.S. and other organizations every year. If you’ve read any of my work, you know that my vacation time is like gold to me, but I just can’t stay away from the Big Dance. It’s a chance to see industry friends, check out new tackle, and watch history getting made. Upon returning, I had the same reaction that the big event always provokes — I’m ready to fish! Of course, I’m spoiled a little, as I’ve already been to Lake El Salto and Casa Vieja Lodge this year. Unfortunately, I brought my 2018 boat to South Carolina to hand it off to the new lucky owner and now I’m in limbo until my 2022 Bass Cat is done on the assembly line. I guess that gives me time to catch up on work and start planning next year’s vacations.

Next up for us are two late Spring/early Summer trips — tarpon in Islamorada, Florida in May, and a return to El Salto in mid-June. I believe that the former trip is booked up completely, but for the latter one Hanna has two or three rooms left. At some point, the lodge is going to ask us to give them back so if you want more info, contact Hanna AS SOON AS POSSIBLE via email or call her at 703-932-6299.
