Want to visit El Salvador virtually?
Be a part of a free virtual immersion in El Salvador and social justice program where you will…

  • Learn why migrants are fleeing Central America and paying coyotes to spirit them across the U.S. border to plead for asylum.
  • Discover the shocking history of U.S. intervention in El Salvador’s civil war.
  • Meet and learn from peers in El Salvador.
  • Get educated on climate change, women’s rights, and other issues and then educate your circle.

Who? For any student interested in learning more about El Salvador, U.S. policies toward Central America, and/or U.S.-Mexico border migration issues. We want people who are really interested in being part of this amazing experience. Since COVID is making travelling difficult, we will bring this small part of the world to you!

What? A weekly guest speaker from El Salvador, in addition to 1–2 meetings with college students in El Salvador. Meetings will be on Zoom.

When? 3-4 pm on WEDNESDAYS throughout the semester. Tentatively FEB 8 to APRIL 5th – no meeting during the week of March 8th (spring break).

Language? We will have translators, so speaking Spanish is not a requirement, but if you know some Spanish, that would be great!

Cost? The program is supported by the Mandel Foundation, and there is no cost to participate. We only require that if you do participate, you share with your social media circle what you learn and what you and others can do about it.

Topics/Guest Speakers? The El Salvadoran Civil War and U.S. involvement; migration; sweat shops; climate change; women’s rights; illegal international adoption; life for Salvadoran students at Jesuit University and life for U.S. students at JCU

To Request Participation: Email Dr. Tracy Masterson, JCU associate professor of psychology, at tmasterson@jcu.edu.

Repair the World Service Corps
The Service Corps mobilizes young adults to invest both in their communities and themselves through the lens of Jewish values. Corps members will spend a total of 10 hours per week volunteering with local service partners and connecting Jewish approaches to justice through issue-area education. In 10 cities around the country, service corps cohorts will be supervised by Repair the World staff to integrate the themes of the program in a small group setting. Corps members are eligible for a $1,250 stipend at the completion of the program, with additional funding available through the Economic Access Fund for corps members impacted by injustice.

Their spring program dates will run from March 7 until May 13.
