Roslyn Public Schools

SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS

January 24, 2022

Dear Roslyn Families,

Late today, a determination by the Nassau County Supreme Court against Albany's mask mandate deemed it unconstitutional. As a result, schools are authorized to make mask wearing optional at this time.

Subsequently, the Governor’s Office released a statement strongly disagreeing with the Court’s ruling and advising an intention to pursue every option to reverse the Court’s decision immediately. Additionally, moments ago, the Commissioner of Education stated that this appeal will be imminently forthcoming.

At the time of this writing, unless a stay is granted upon the filing of an appeal, there is no authority to require that masks be worn in public schools. Therefore, effective tomorrow, January 24th, masks are optional. Any staff member or student who wishes to continue to wear a mask may continue, but will not be required to do so. Please keep in mind, this can change again at any moment. If the appeal is filed and a stay is granted, public schools will be required to follow and enforce the mask mandate once again.

We will continue to practice mitigation protocols such as proper ventilation, good hygiene and respecting of personal space. It is very important that whether you choose to wear your mask or not at this time, we respect each other’s wishes and choices in order to maintain a safe and healthy school environment both physically and emotionally.

As you can see this is happening in real time. I will keep you updated if and when anything further occurs.

Sincerely,

Allison Brown

Superintendent of Schools
