WELCOME BACK!
Your CAPA Board of Directors met, in person, for the first time in more than two years, for the board meeting in May.

It is symbolic because we celebrate the Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month of May this month and the board breaks for summer after this meeting. Sub-committees will continue to meet to continue planning to bring you the Splendor of the East in August, another episode of Taste of Asia and an Education Committee webinar in the Fall and you are welcome to attend. Just drop us a line at info@capa-mi.org with your interest.

I could not be there but by all accounts, it was a hit!! The food for this event was catered in by Julie-Ryan Philippine Cuisine and that was an even bigger hit!

I think pictures are worth a thousand words so I'll let you see the sentiment in these pictures.
CAPA ANNUAL LEADERSHIP SUMMIT

CAPA hosted our annual leadership summit in honor of the APIA month of May, on May 7th. This year's theme was Leading from Your Cultural Values.

Jaspreet Singh, Vice President of Corporate Services, DTE, kicked us off by sharing his journey to leadership.

Dug Song, CSO for Cisco Security and former co-founder and CEO of Cisco’s acquired company Duo Security, led us through a delightful presentation, where he shared his experiences on leading while #aapi. He walked us through the process of discovering our values, managing and living through those values.

We are so incredibly blessed to have been able to spend the morning learning from such incredibly talented leaders in our community and business world.

In the latter half of the morning, we had the opportunity to put into practice a lot of what Jaspreet and Dug shared in the first half of the morning. Linda Akutagawa, President and CEO of LEAP (Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics) led us through a workshop that had us exploring the relationship between values, behaviors, and perceptions along with the core values that most strongly influence us.

We spent half a day immersed in increasing our awareness of the influence and impact of our Asian culture and the resulting perceptions and interpretations in a session that helped us reflect on balancing cultural values to lead more authentically and identifying leadership enhancing behaviors to increase our effectiveness in the field of our choosing.

If you missed the session, or simply want another chance at absorbing the content (I know I do), please follow the link and use the password provided to access the session for a limited time.

SPLENDOR OF THE EAST
Planning for the 2022 Splendor of the East is underway! This year’s theme of Metamorphosis aims to highlight the rebirth of ourselves and our community after the past 2 years. As we head into our 3rd decade of SOE, we are changing things up a bit and bring a new twist to CAPA’s signature event!

This year’s SOE will be held outdoors at the beautiful Baypoint Beach at Stoney Creek Metro Park in Shelby Twp! The event will be free to the public and will be a great way to share the wonderful talent and beauty of Michigan’s AAPI community with the community at large. Please mark your calendars!

When: August 6th, 2022
Time: 5pm
Where: Stoney Creek Metro Park (Baypointe Beach)

In order to make this year’s Splendor of the East show spectacular, we need YOU! To make the 2022 SOE the best ever, we’re reaching out to ask you all to start preparing your groups of dancers, musicians, singers and artists to participate in the show this summer!

· All performances must tie to the theme of Metamorphosis (change, renewal, growth, etc.)

Initial applications should be a video submission of the choreographer detailing the act and how it will relate to this year’s theme, as well as a sample of the type of performance (sample of a dance, instrumental or vocal song, etc.). Please also specify the number of participants in your act and which culture you are representing.
