IAM UPDATE
December 2021
Please Remember IAM on this Giving Tuesday!
IAM was founded on a simple principle - that a community that banded together could better assist our struggling neighbors in need. With your help, IAM has been lifting up people and families on the edge of crisis. Together, we’ve helped keep neighbors fed, warm, safe in their homes, and healthy.

Please help us continue this critical work by participating in Giving Tuesday 2021 by contributing today to IAM. Your generosity will immediately help the most vulnerable among us. and make Henderson County a better place for all of us.

Together, we are the hope for a better future!
Our December Food Needs List
IAM's annual Holiday Food Drive continues until December 10th. Please help us collect a variety of traditional holiday foods to be distributed to our neighbors in need during the holiday season in November and December

Your holiday food donations allow IAM to provide local residents facing a short-term or long-term financial crisis with all of the ingredients they need to prepare a special holiday meal in their own homes for either Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Your donations help turn the stress of the holidays into joy for hundreds of local families with children and senior citizens who otherwise would not get to enjoy a Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner at home. Each household gets to choose a turkey or ham. Small to medium turkeys (8-14 lbs.) are best and hams can be fresh or canned hams.

Donations will be accepted through December 10th on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and Fridays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Please call IAM at 828-697-7029 to arrange the pick-up of large donations.

Thank you for sharing the joy of the season with our neighbors who struggle so hard to make ends meet every day of the year.
IAM's Clothing Needs for December
The recent pattern of cold and windy days in Henderson County has magnified our need for cold weather clothing - especially winter jackets for adults! Please review the items on our December needs list and share them with your friends, neighbors, faith community, workplace and/or civic organization.

The need is real and immediate. Thank you!
Help IAM Help Our Neighbors...
Housing and food insecurity are not just problems for adults. That’s why IAM is here to assist families with helping hands and caring hearts.

IAM is grateful to everyone who recognizes the need in our community and responds with "I Am IAM!" Your compassion and generosity make our mission possible.

Thank you for being a vital part of the solution for thousands of Henderson County children and adults.
Your gifts to IAM help Henderson County residents who desperately need assistance with basic needs (names are changed):

  • Linda is 89 years old, suffers from cancer and lives on just $400 a month. She came to IAM for assistance when her septic tank system failed. IAM paid for Linda’s connection to the City of Hendersonville’s sewer lines. IAM also helped her with food and personal hygiene items.

  • Tom is in his early 40s. He was seriously injured in a car accident as a child. Injuries from the accident led to liver disease and cognitive problems. As a result, Tom has trouble holding down a job. A generous landlord allows him and his young son to live in an apartment free of charge in exchange for yard work and odd jobs. He washes their clothing in the sink and dries it on the radiator. IAM helped Tom with food, gas for his car, an electric heater and warm clothing for the winter ahead.

  • Connie, a young mother with a baby and a toddler, tries to make ends meet on her husband’s minimum wages. He works in agriculture from dawn to dusk. They share a single-wide trailer with another family. Each family’s rent is $1,200 a month. She is grateful to ride with a friend to IAM’s Drive-Thru Tuesday for the weekly distribution of a week’s worth of nutritious food and baby diapers. Her family cannot afford a car.
Thank You

Thank you, Bank of America!
Volunteers Wanted!
File Managers and Thrift Store Staff
IAM is blessed with wonderful volunteers. As we prepare to launch our IAM Thrift Store in early 2022, we are looking for volunteers to help us staff this exciting new operation!

File Managers:

IAM's File Managers are critical to the smooth operation of our organization. In this important position, volunteers assist us to maintain client files, provide support to our Client Receptionists, and process outgoing mail. Good organizational and basic computer skills are required.

Volunteer and be on the front lines of IAM's mission and make a real difference in our neighbors' lives every week.

Thrift Store Volunteers:

When operations begin, we will need volunteers to serve as check-out cashiers, pricers and sorters. We are excited about the potential of the new store and would love to discuss this opportunity with interested persons.

Thank You Jose, Maria, and JJ Alonso!
Very often, volunteering at IAM can be a family affair. We have several couples that are stalwart volunteers for IAM and, in at least one case, we are blessed with a family that volunteers together.

On most Thursdays, José and Maria Alonso volunteer their time to purchase specific food items for our Latino neighbors. On some Tuesdays, they also volunteer along with their daughter during our weekly Drive-Thru Tuesday events. The Alonso family provides compassionate service as well as Spanish language skills which allow IAM to better serve our Hispanic neighbors in need.

José is Pastor en Español at First Baptist Church, Hendersonville, NC, and IAM appreciates everything the Alonso family does to support the important work in expanding our community outreach.

Thank you, José, Maria, and JJ!
Don't Have Time to Donate Food and Clothes?
Your heartfelt contribution to IAM will make an extraordinary difference in the lives of those who are struggling — right now when they need it the most.

Thank you for sharing year-end contributions and other funds to help local residents who are burdened by the intense stresses of living in a constant state of desperate need. Please consider donating stocks and including IAM in your will.
Because we purchase in bulk and often receive generous discounts from our vendors, your dollars can go even further when you make a direct contribution to IAM. Every dollar you provide helps IAM purchase food for four meals from MANNA FoodBank, our Feeding America partner.
