Focusing on the Interdisciplinary Nature of Our Work and the Expanding Role of Technology

Dear VOS Members,

Laurent Guiot and Kristin Kirkby Shaw

It is with great honor and gratitude that I step into the role of VOS President. I have been a proud member of the VOS for 2 decades, and my appreciation for this community and what it represents grows stronger each year. VOS '25 in Breckenridge was a phenomenal meeting, and I want to extend my deepest thanks to Laurent and Heidi for their leadership, to Mike and Liz for a fantastic scientific program, and all the board members for their hard work to make the event successful. And a huge congratulations to all the presenters and award winners!

Last year Laurent set the goal of fostering collaboration and collegiality within VOS, and I would like to continue that message and emphasize the interdisciplinary nature of our work in caring for patients. Professor Yves Harder, our 2025 Jacques Jenny Lecturer, reminded us how to care for those tissues that get in the way of getting to bones and joints. And a standout lecture in Breck was Emily Chapel’s insightful, hilarious and humbling talk on “Sounds and Squiggles,” reminding us that our job extends outside of the surgical drape.

While VOS is primarily dedicated to advancing orthopedic surgical procedures, it is crucial to acknowledge what happens outside the OR: patient assessment and diagnosis, client communication, pain management and rehabilitation, grant and manuscript writing, educating students/house officers/referring veterinarians, leading our clinical teams, and caring for ourselves so that we can maintain the durability needed for a long career. The proficiencies we develop beyond technical skills are what make us not just excellent surgeons but superb clinicians, and I hope to bring some of this focus to VOS 2026. Additionally, I look forward to exploring the expanding role of technology in orthopedic surgery, from AI-assisted clinical records and image interpretation to advancements in patient-specific guides and robotic-assisted procedures.

Dr. Kristin Kirkby Shaw

With VOS 2026 returning to Big Sky and featuring our JJ lecturer, Dr. Rachel Frank, an esteemed orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist, it promises to be an unforgettable event. I am excited for the year ahead and look forward to seeing you all in Big Sky for another fantastic meeting!

Sincerely,

Kristin Kirkby Shaw, DVM, MS, PhD, DACVS (SA), DACVSMR

President, Veterinary Orthopedic Society

Thank You for an Amazing Week at Breckenridge — and a Great Year as President!

Hello VOS members!

I want to thank all of you that attended and all the presenters for creating an amazing week. We learned a lot together and had a great time sharing during the sessions, on the slopes and at all the social events that make VOS so unique. Congratulations again to everyone who presented their work and particularly to those who won awards! This is no small feat, and I sincerely hope that you will continue to bring your research to VOS in future years!

I also want to thank the VOS Board, Heidi, our secretary, Dr. Yves Harder, our JJ lecturer, and of course Emily and our little family for their outstanding contribution and work in bringing to life my vision of a VOS based on collegiality and collaboration.

I am proud to be part of the VOS family, and thankful for the opportunity to have served you as your president for a year. It was a fulfilling experience that allowed me to give back to an organization that helped shape my career.

I will continue to serve for another year as your past president, and I hope to inspire you to come back for more and to sign up to take an active role in the future VOS conferences. In my role as past president, I will help the board with the recruitment of its new members, so feel free to reach out to me if you have any interest, questions, or feel you know someone we should get on board. 😊

The future of VOS is bright, and we want you to be part of it! If you liked VOS this year, spread the word to everyone. Next year will be even more innovative and exciting with Kristin leading the Board as your new president!

2025 STEVEN M. FOX LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD RECIPIENT – GAIL SMITH, VMD, PHD

Veterinary Orthopedic Society's Steven Fox Lifetime Achievement Award is given annually. Steve Fox’s contributions to the VOS, veterinary orthopedics and pain management have been numerous and impactful. This award in his name is presented annually to one VOS member who has shown dedication and commitment to the field of veterinary orthopedics and the VOS.

Previous award recipients include Steven M. Fox in 2022, Gretchen Flo in 2023, and Dan Lewis in 2024.

Dr. Gail Smith

This year, the award was given to Gail Smith, VMD, PhD.

Gail received his BS in Material Science Engineering from Penn where he went on to complete his VMD in 1974 and surgical residency in 1979. He then went on to complete his PhD in engineering in 1982. This dual degree of engineering and veterinary surgery laid the groundwork for his innovative research investigating the canine and feline musculoskeletal system in both health and disease for which he holds two U.S. patents.

Gail served many roles at Penn including Chief of Surgery and Chair of the Department of Clinical Studies. He trained almost 90 residents and 14 post docs, all of whom went on to get residencies and to become boarded in surgery.

He has contributed to the scientific literature more than 150 research articles, book chapters and proceedings. Dr. Smith has received recognition for research excellence by notable institutions including The Morris Animal Foundation, SmithKline Beecham, the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Kennel Club, and the University of Pennsylvania. Dr Smith was awarded the prestigious Iams Saki Patsaama Award for excellence in Orthopaedics by the World Small Animal Veterinary Association, the Blaine Award presented by the British Small Animal Veterinary Association for outstanding contributions to the advancement of small animal veterinary medicine or surgery, and the ACVS Merit Award, which is given to an individual who has a career dominated by major and ongoing contributions to the art and science of veterinary surgery.

PennHIP: Perhaps the most pervasive of Gail’s accomplishments and his greatest contribution is his body of scientific research that has enhanced the understanding of canine hip dysplasia, primarily from the biomechanical standpoint, and led to the subsequent development of the PennHIP diagnostic methodology. Throughout the world, this method continues as a standard for identifying dogs at risk for transmitting genes that influence the development of hip dysplasia.

Gail served on the board of VOS for many years and was the president of this esteemed organization in 1998.
