The Omicron variant has quickly brought the business community back to uncertainty, with event cancellations, meetings being pushed remote, and of course, new guidelines from the government.

The state of California is extending its indoor mask mandate through February 15, 2022, while the County of Los Angeles has instituted new indoor mask mandates for employees. As soon as possible, but no later than January 17, all employers within the county are required to provide indoor workers with medical-grade masks, such as surgical masks, N95s, or KN95s.

Under a new proposal by Assemblyman Ash Kalra, California would enact a first-in-the-nation universal healthcare plan, providing health services to every residents financed by a broad array of new taxes on individuals and businesses. The legislation faces significant hurdles from the Capitol, insurance companies, hospitals, and potentially voters.

Nuclear energy has been creeping up in public estimation, despite its long record of unfulfilled promise.

The impetus has come from government and big business, among other sources.

Billions of dollars in incentives to keep existing nuclear plants operating and to get new nuclear technologies off the drawing board were enacted as part of the $1.2-trillion infrastructure bill.

California officials Tuesday adopted a series of emergency drought rules to help the state conserve water, but many of the restrictions are already in place in the city of Los Angeles. The temporary rules adopted by the State Water Resources Control Board on Tuesday will be in effect for one year and are aimed at promoting water conservation and preventing unreasonable water waste. People who violate the rules could face up to $500.

What looks to be a strong holiday shopping season has pushed Southern California retailers’ payrolls back above pre-pandemic employment levels.

In November, merchants in the four-county region added 23,400 workers compared with jobs growing 7,600 monthly in the recovery. The holiday shopping month is traditionally a big hiring period for retailers, with an average 28,000 workers added since 2000 to meet the shopping rush.

In an effort to address the homelessness crisis in Los Angeles, a coalition of housing advocates, labor unions and progressive activist groups plan to file for a ballot measure that would increase taxes on real estate transactions in the city to fund permanent housing for homeless people and those at risk of homlessness. The organizers hope to collect 65,000 signatures to qualify for the 2022 ballot.
