Cary Library is truly a treasured place and we are so incredibly grateful for it!

Coming Home

Raymond Kilgour, a Lexington native, received his first Cary library card at age 7 in 1910, and was an avid user for 30 years. This fall, his daughter, Katharine generously donated to Cary Library in memory of her father, who shared wonderful stories about spending time at Cary Library as a child.

Mr. Kilgour reminisced about the happy hours he spent at the library, in childhood checking out special kaleidoscope cards to use at home. His early love of libraries developed into a lifelong passion. Eventually, he became a Professor of Library Sciences at the University of Michigan. In the 1980s, Katharine visited Cary Library with her then elderly father, who was delighted to find the library still in the building he loved as a child.

A Destination

Olivia Kelley

In the summer of 1994, my family moved to Lexington. A friendless 15-year-old bibliophile, I found the library a block away. It quickly became my favorite place. The librarians became friends and wonderful guides as I navigated my new neighborhood and town.

Some years later, I had small boys and it became a sanctuary once again. From Baby Lap Time to Toddler Story Time, Cary Library was a daily destination where we would meet friends and explore new worlds in books.

These days, we are there often. You have probably seen us lugging our book bags, heavy with adventure stories, timeless chapter books, and colorful graphic novels. Once again, the librarians are friends and wonderful guides in navigating this amazing town.

With the holidays just around the corner, it is wonderful time to reflect on what we have to be grateful for - family, friends and our Lexington community. And the centerpiece of our community is Cary Library. We all recognize that Cary Library is a place to gather, share and connect. It’s a place to make memories. The stories above exemplify some of the ways Cary Library enriches our lives.

This month is our Annual Appeal, when we ask each of you to reach deep into your pocket and help us support and grow our library programs and collections. Each donation helps, so give what you can and help us build more memories. Check your mailbox for our Appeal letter or go to our website with the button below. Thank you and Happy Holidays!
